SOURCE: engine stalls, check engine light, not fuel filter.

the white smoke as it stalls could be steam in the exhaust. This is caused by coolant leaking into cylinders from a leaking head gasket. You should check cylinder compression next with a compression tester.

SOURCE: intermittant check engine light

The only way to find out what the problem is is by doing a scan of the car computer module using an OBD code reader.
The codes returned will tell you the cause of the problem.

SOURCE: check engine light comes on intermittently,

the 1st thing u need to do is have the system computer tested for trouble codes, anytime the light comes on a trouble code is stored, there are over 200 of these codes for potential system malfunctions, yours sounds like a O2 problem.

1998 VOLVO S70 INTERMITTENT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, GOES OFF COMES ON NO EMISSION CODES

intermittent engine codes are not serious and it just indicates that one or more of the sensors is reporting a bad signal..at what ever time intervals.....this just means that as you drive , bad connections develops as a result of the movement for a second or long enough for the computer to detect a fault and then it goes back to normal....you can check for bad connections yourself by wiggling the wires with engine running and see if the light comes on ..which will tell you where the bad connection is and then fix it yourself or just wait until the connection gets really bad and the engine light stays on permanently .the computer will then store the code thats causing the fault and you'll know exactly where it's coming from.

Have you checked the O2 or MAP sensors? I would check these.

Check Engine Light comes every few days

Is this an O2 sensor code? If so then check the wiring to the sensor. Since the light comes on every few days then it is intermittent. Once the fault goes away then the light goes out. Fault comes back and the light comes on. Check the wiring carefuly to insure there is not a bare spot somewhere and is touching the engine or some other metal part of the car. Check the connector to ensure it latches firmly. Check the terminals inside both of the connectors to make sure thye have not spread open, are not dirty, or corroded. I once found a connection inside a fuse panel on a 97 LHS car that was not stripped back far enough at the factory. This caused and intermittent open circuit to the fuel pump. I have also reapired many a lose and dirty connector causing the check engine light to come on. Also some aftermarket parts like O2 sensors, MAP sensors, etc are made cheap and fail soon after installation. You get what you pay for. Cheap is not always a bargain.

i know that if the gas cap is loose then the check engine light will come on. as far as the fuel gauge going up and down the "float" you have in your tank could be getting stuck. This is a pain in the rear to change because you will have to drop the fuel tank and either replace the part connected (best bet) to it or make sure the passage is clear.
