HOW DO I REPLACE THE SERPENTINE BELT ON MY1998 A4 2.8 V6? WHAT DO I NEED TO REMOVE TO EVEN GET AT IT? DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL TOOLS??
Joecoolvette must not ever been near an A4 Audi. Although his outline of the serpentine belt change is correct, you can't get to on an A4. Check out AudiWorld Tech Articles, Chris Hansen has a nice post there on Serpentine Belt Tensioner Replacement that would address most of this question.
Really?
I came back, and viewed your statement, hbbowman. Since you spouted using AudiWorld Tech Articles, how about this one? 2.8 Serpentine Belt Tensioner Replacement. Covers replacing a serpentine belt, ay?http://www.audiworld.com/tech/ ( In the list under - Also, be sure to check out the topic specific Technical pages, click on Engine. Then next to A4. A6 under the Models heading, click on - 2.8 Serpentine Belt Tensioner Replacement. W-O-W! Is that a 1/2 breaker bar in that guy's hand?
joecoolvette, I think he was referring the fact that you didn't explain having to take the front end of the car apart first. You have to put the A4 in the service position, which consists of taking the bumper cover off, bumpers off, hoses, and electrical connections. There is no way to get at the belt otherwise.
There is enough space if you remove the fan assembly on the passenger side of radiator. Small Phillips screw at top and the lower 'arm' has a locking tab which needs to be overcome to rotate fan assembly. Also need to extract fan wire harness from metal clips and there's just enough harness to then place fan on engine while still connected.

You serpentine belt goes around, and under a series of pulleys. There is one pulley that is a tensioner pulley. It puts tension against the belt keeping it tight. This tensioner pulley is on an 'arm' which attaches to a bracket.
The arm is spring loaded. It uses this spring power to push the pulley out, against the serpentine belt. The arm pivots on the bracket.
The arm has a square hole in it. You use a wrench device in that square hole, to pull the tensioner pulley away from the serpentine belt, so that you can slip the belt off of one pulley. Then you release the arm slowly so that it is fully extended.
Since you now have the serpentine belt off of one pulley, you just slip it off of all the other pulleys.
There is a wrench that is sold that resembles a long, flat, thick bar, and has a square protrusion on one end, with a handle on the other end. The square protrusion is usually 1/2 inch in width.
The thin flatness of the bar makes it easier to slip between the radiator fan shroud, and the tensioner pulley arm.
I use a 1/2 inch breaker bar.
The routing for your serpentine belt should be on a label under the hood, or on the radiator support.
