I just bought a 1996 Ford Taurus and it is running okay but it started running hot today. When I raised the hood antifreeze was bubbling out of the cap on the plastic container where I put the antifreeze in. The car smelled hot too. How can I tell if it just needs more antifreeze or if something needs repaired? How do I check the antifreeze level? My Ford truck has a way of just opening the cap and looking but, I can't find a cap on the Taurus.
Testimonial: "I changed the thermostat and the reservoir cap and haven't had any problems since. Thanks"

Did you have red antifreeze prior to the flushing? Ford engines are generally aluminium and should be using blue antifreeze which is suitable for aluminium engine blocks! I think the antifreeze is reacting to the aluminium.....re flush and use blue!
your car is overheating-may be a number of things-blown head gasket would cause bad running and bubbling sounds-have you noticed antifreeze leak out-have you noticed a sweet smell, hot antifreeze-cheers Denny
OVERHEATING CAN BE CAUSED BY LOW COOLANT,TOU COULD HAVE TOO MUCH WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM YOU NEED 50/ 50 MIXTURE OF ANTIFREEZE AND WATER TO RAISE BOILING POINT.IF COOLANT OKAY, IF VECHICLE OVERHEATING DURING SHORT DRIVE COULD HAVE BAD THERMOSTAT AND FAULTY RADIATOR PRESSURE COOLANT CAP. IF THERMOSTAT OKAY CHECK WATER PUMP IF WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING.YOU NEED NEW WATER PUMP.IF VECHICLE OVERHEATING WHILE VECHICLE SITTING IN A LONG TRAFFIC LINE.CHECK TO SEE IF COOLANT FANS RUNNING IF NOT CHECK COOLING FANS FUSE AND RELAYS.IF ALL IS GOOD. YOU COULD HAVE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CODE SCAN FOR FAULTY PCM. HOT WIRE TO SEE IF COOLANT FANS WORK IF NO FAN MOTOR BAD IF YES COOLANT FANS WHEN HOT WIRED. FAULT COULD BE IN THE COOLANT FANS WIRES MAKE COOLANT FANS RECEIVING POWER IF NOT YOU HAVE BLOWED FUSE OR BAD RELAYS.
Warm the car up till the cooling fan comes on then about another 3 to 5 min. shut the engine off for about 10 min. keep repeating till the coolant flows. The upper radiator hose will get hot close to the radiator and the air from the fans is hot. Leave the radiator cap loose or off while doing this and keep the antifreeze full. Be very carefull antifreeze can go up to 230 degrees and servely burnt If you are getting air bubbles and the antifreez doesn't go down you have combustion getting into the cooling system. The most common reason for this is a blown head gasket.
