My shifter is stuck on my 2005 jaguar 4.2 S type and I cant get the car in gear. I start the car and the shifter is lit on the reverse marker, but it is not in gear. When I pull down on the shifter to put it in any gear,it is stuck,it wont move up or down.
With the car started press on the brake pedal. Listen carefully for a "Click" sound coming from under the gear shift cover. If you do not hear one you will need to test the brake pedal switch, if you hear a click then most likely the lock somehow became disconnected from the solenoid. Remove the shifter cover and the assemble is can be seen for troubleshooting and repair.

the shifter cable is on the lift side of the transmission, make sure it is bolted to the trnsmission
SOURCE: I have a jaguar xj8 and the gear got stuck in park.
Most likely the lock out switch at the brake pedal is at fault, because in order to put it in in to any gear you have to step on the brake first ! Their is a switch located which prevents you put it in gear with out stepping on the brake pedal, so check this switch first.

there is a solenoid on the shifter that is activated when you hit the brake pedal. This can be a bd solenoid or a faulty curcuit between the two. see if you hear a clicking noise when you hit the brake and try to shift?

SOURCE: My 2003 Jaguar S-Type has a faulty Reverse Park
This is a sensor fault. The easiest way to locate wich sensor is faulty is to get up close to the sensors when the car is in reverse gear (engine off) with the ignition on and put your thumb nail on the sensor face as this will amplify the ticking noise that can be heard from the sensors. No tick indicates a sensor fault.
To disconnect the system will just give you the same problem with the constant tone unless you disconnect the park aid module wich is located in the boot of the vehicle on the left hand side behind the carpet trim. Beware that the handbrake module is there so ensure that you are looking at the right module (it will say on it)
Sensors are not expensive unless you need to have them painted to body coulor as they come in black. Easy push in/out fitment from the behind the bumper. Corner sensors can be replaced with the bumper in situ but centre sensors require the bumper to be removed.
Hope that helps
SOURCE: My 2004 jaguar s type is stuck in gear. The
your gbox cable has proberly snapped or bolt came out (it happened with mine) altho i was lucky
My 2005
S-Type was stuck in reverse but the gear stick was stuck in park. After taking
the console apart trying to figure out why the shift lock wouldn't open...three
hours later I got under the car and discover that one of the two bolts that held
the transmission cable in place was missing...I replaced it and that was all it
took.
