My 1978 Ford F250 with a 460 V-8 engine has a broken belt
I have a 1978 Ford F250 with a 460 V-8 engine w/air. The belt that drives the power steering pump broke and fell off. I need to replace it and was wondering if you have access to a belt diagram and /or part number for the belt I need to replace. Thanks!

Every 1978 Chevy van was shipped with a sticker affixed to the engine shroud, showing a diagram of the belt threading. If this sticker is lost, you're a little lost as well, since the belt threading varies with engine and optional equipment (such as air conditioning, California emissions, power steering, etc.).
Your best bet if you can't find the sticker is to do an Internet search for "1978 Chevy belt routing) and see which engine configuration most closely matches what you have... and install the belts THAT way. Sorry I couldn't provide a definitive answer!
If they are standard power brakes, check the vacuum booster. The diaphragm may be broken. If it holds a vacuum it's OK. If the brakes run through the power steering pump, make sure the belt is tight and the steering is smooth.
Sounds like the serpentine accessory drive belt on the engine is either broken or has come off. It drives the alternator and power steering pump, as well as the air conditioning compressor and (depending on the engine) the engine coolant pump. Check the belt (it's on the right, or passenger, side of the engine, between the engine and the fender) and replace it if needed. Also, check all the pulleys that it gos over to make sure they aren't loose. There should be a diagram under the hood of your car that shows how the belt goes on.
They do not stretch that much. That engine uses a serpentine belt. Something has gone bad that caused the belt to come loose. All pulleys must be inspected to diagnose the problem.

Check for low power steering fluid, a broken belt (there is a belt that connects the engine's main drive pulley to the power steering, alternator, air conditioning, etc. pulleys) or your power steering pump went bad and will need to be replaced.
Hmm.. Low fluid in the power steering pump, broken belt driving the power steering pump, failed component causing loss of power steering fluid, failed power steering pump.
Check for a broken belt first, check the oil in the pump, look for leakage under the truck.
If the pump is low on fluid you want to put about half the amount in that you're going to need and then start the truck and turn the wheel slowly from stop to stop, each way- spend about ten seconds going from one stop to the other. This will allow any air in the system to be purged out in a controlled fashion, it can really spray if you get a big, compressed bubble of air in the system and release it quickly. Shut the truck off and top the steering pump up, check for leaks.
He may be right. If the alternator pulley bearing has failed, or one of the belt idler pulleys has failed, the belt can come off or break and since the belt also drives the power steering pump you will also lose your power steering assist. With the engine off, check all the pulleys to make sure they turn freely by hand before installing a new belt and you'll probably find the problem. [the large crankshaft pulley won't turn by hand however] Take a good look at the belt tensioner also to make sure it isn't worn enough to tilt the tensioner pulley off to the side as this can also cause the belt to come off. Remove the power steering pressure hose (3A719) by unscrewing connector from the pump.
On the Aerostar 3.0L V-6 engine (6007), loosen the drive belt tensioner (6B209) and adjustment bolts.

On the 2.3L I-4 and 4.0L V-6 engines, slacken belt tension by lifting drive belt tensioner in a counterclockwise direction. On Ranger 3.0L V-6 engines, slacken belt tension by lifting drive belt tensioner in a clockwise direction. Remove drive belt (8620) from under drive belt tensioner and slowly lower pulley to stop. Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump pulley (3A733).

NOTE: If the drive belt requires servicing, refer to Section 03-05 .
Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump pulley.
Remove the oil dipstick tube.
Remove the power steering pump support (3C511).
Install Steering Pump Pulley Remover T69L-10300-B on the pulley.
NOTE: Do not apply pressure on the power steering pump rotor shaft (3B559). Pressure will damage internal thrust areas of the power steering pump (3A674).
While holding the remover tool nut stationary with a wrench, rotate the inner spindle of the remover tool clockwise until the pulley is pulled off the power steering pump rotor shaft.
Remove the bolts attaching the power steering pump to the A/C compressor mounting bracket (2882).
Installation
Install the power steering pump on the A/C compressor mounting bracket. Install and tighten attaching bolts to 41-61 Nm (30-45 lb-ft). On 4.0L engine, tighten to 47-64 Nm (35-47 lb-ft).
Position the support on the A/C compressor mounting bracket. Install mounting bolts and tighten to 47-64 Nm (35-47 lb-ft).
NOTE: Fore/aft location of power steering pump pulley on power steering pump rotor shaft is critical. Incorrect belt alignment may cause drive belt squeal or chirp. Make sure pull-off groove on power steering pump pulley is facing front and flush with end of shaft ± 0.254mm (± 0.010 inch).
Install the Steering Pump Pulley Replacer T65P-3A733-C and install the power steering pump pulley.
Install the drive belt on the power steering pump pulley.
On the 2.3L I-4, Ranger 3.0L V-6, and 4.0L V-6 engines, position and rotate drive belt on engine. While lifting drive belt tensioner in a counterclockwise direction (clockwise on Ranger 3.0L V-6), slide drive belt under drive belt tensioner and lower drive belt tensioner to drive belt.
On Aerostar 3.0L V-6 engine, position the belt idler pulley (8678) assembly to give the drive belt the tension specified. Refer to belt tension check in Section 03-05 . Tighten the drive belt tensioner and adjustment bolts to 47-64 Nm (35-47 lb-ft).
Install the power steering pump support, if removed.
Install the oil dipstick tube.
Install the pressure hose tube nut and new Teflon® wagner into power steering pump valve outlet fitting (3D654) and tighten to 41-54 Nm (30-40 lb-ft).
Connect the power steering return hose to the power steering pump, and reposition the clamp.
Fill the power steering oil reservoir (3A697) with Premium Power Steering Fluid E6AZ-19582-AA or equivalent fluid meeting specification ESW-M2C33-F. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel (3600) from left to right without hitting stops to remove air from the system.
Check for leaks and recheck the fluid level. Add fluid if necessary to proper level as specified in Section 11-00 .

have you checked under hood look at the drive belts at front of engine ? there is the possibility that your car has belt driven power steer pump? and this belt has broken ? you you see pump and pully and if belt is missing ? or loose? other than this check power steer fluid level ?in reservoir you may have had a leak from pipe/s please by all means come back with update and/or if you req further advice/info best wishes from uk
