Why would the air bag light (SRS) flash for an oil change?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

You need to look up the codes in a service manual. It is probably wanting you to take it in for tune up or oil change.

My 2004 mercury sable air bag light blinks on and off 3 times...tried the battery thing..the switch thing..cant get to reset

When the air bag system has a problem it uses the air bag light tell you what the codes are. Three flashes then 1 or 2 second pause then 2 flashes would be a code 32. Then Google it and find out what the code is for. Hope this helps
tip

OBD1 Trouble codes, without a scan tool.

Here is a tip for retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from any OBD1 GM vehicle. <br /><br />First thing is your going to need to get a paper clip, and bend it into a U shape. <br /><br />Now stick the ends of the paper clip into the 2 top right hand side holes in the connector. Note: Do this with the key in the run position, but with the engine off.<br /><br />You should now see your check engine light flash once, pause, then 2 times. This indicates that your ECM is working properly.<br /><br />Now it will blink indicating your code. For example an EGR failure code is DTC 32. You will see your light blink 3 times, pause, then blink 2 times, giving you code 32.<br /><br />A list of codes can be found here: http://www.gmtuners.com/OBD1_DTC.htm.<br /><br />Hopefully this helps some of you all out there. Thanks for looking.

Toyaota Camry 1994 engine won't start, Engine light on

I would check for fuel,(pressure and injector pulse), spark, and compression, before checking any codes. Lack of any of these basics can result in codes, and then you waste alot of time chasing a symptom, instead of the actual problem. If more people followed basic diagnostics, which always come back to these three basics, rather than chasing codes first, they would find no starts much more quickly.

I just bought a 2003 Ford F150, and a warning chime goes off right after starting. Chimes 5 times, pause, and repeat 4 more times. There are no lights or codes displayed on the dash. It drives fine, but...

The warning chime of 5x5 is a sign that the SRS ( airbag ) light is burnt out, and there is an error with the SRS system.

Verify SRS ( airbag ) lamp operation, turn the key from off to run ( do not start ) the airbag lamp should illuminate. If not, it is burnt out. Need to pull the cluster and replace.
( thread at F150online.com on cluster removal in the how to forum - titled about changing cluster illumination color or installing a cluster overlay ).

Once you replace the SRS bulb, you will get a LFC ( light Flash Code ) of a 2 digit number.
Example :
flash flash flash flash { short pause } flash flash { longer pause } flash repeats the same for 5 times, the solid on.
This is an example of a LFC 4-2. Once you have the LFC start a new problem with the LFC and we can get that fixed after you get the bulb replaced.

I'm getting an audible alarm from my instrument cluster as the air bag light doesn't light up with the rest of my instrument lights when i turned the key to on the alarm is 5 beeps appox. 5 times is there...

Replace the airbag lamp in the cluster, and get the LFC ( Light Flash Code ) to figure out what the problem is with the SRS.
The 5x5 beeping is an indication that there is a SRS problem waiting and the airbag light cannot give the LFC. Page 105 in the owners manual.

Once you replace the airbag light, you will get a LFC that is a 2 digit number presented by the flashes.
Example is a LFC of 42, the airbag light would flash 4 times, pause flash 2 times pause and repeat.

Once you have the LFC, either start a new problem, or add a comment to this problem with the number for further diagnoses.

Airbag dashboard light keeps blinking. In 1997 Ford Thunderbird.

The air bag computer will have to be scanned and the code read to know what the fault the computer detects. The problem will have to be repaired for the light to shut off. Keep in mind, when the air bag light is illuminated the air bag system is deactivated. Meaning, in the event of a collision the bags won't deploy.

Air bag light on

the flashing is a code, you need to get a pen and a piece of paper and decode this. It is a two digit number the first set of flashes is the first number so lets say it flashes 3 times and then pauses for 3 to 5 seconds your first number would be 3 and then after the pause it blinks 4 times that would be your second number... so your code would be 34. anyways here is a list of the code meanings so after you count the two set of flashes and get your code compare it here

12=Low Battery Voltage
13=Air Bag Circuit Shorted to Ground
14=Primary Crash Sensor Circuit Shorted to Ground

94 Ford Bronco - SRS Lamp blinking 12

Code 12 is loss of voltage to airbag firing circuit. Start with checking airbag fuse. It should be fuse number 15 for the cluster. It is also the airbag fuse. If the fuse is good then the airbag module might be bad.

Flashing SRS Dash Light/ non-working cruse control

The flashing light should be giving you a code that will help determine the fault. It will be in morse code like 3 flashes then a short pause and 2 flashes.
However with your second concern that cruise control does not work I would have to say you most likely have a bad clock spring. This is a unit that mounts behind the steering wheel to make electrical contact with cruise switches and air bag.

Air bag light

You can't reset it. It's flashing a code. If you tell me the code, I can tell you the proceedure to isolate the fault.

when you start up, there is an 8 second system test and the light is on during this period. Then it flashes out a 2-digit code. The first group of flashes is the first digit and then there is a pause before the second group of flashes which represent the second digit.

flash-flash-flash-pause-flash-flash-flash-flash-flash-flash = code 36
