Overheating and leaking coolant

My dodge ram 86 2wd pickup is leaking coolant and is overheating incredibly fast. we filled up the radiator with andifreeze, replaced the upper radiator hose and it still seems to be leaking. it's not a problem with the reservoir. the coolant seems to be leaking onto the engine.

Get yourself a pressure tester. Make sure everything is as dry as possible, use compressed air if available. Top off the radiator and hook up to tester. Pump up not to exceed the psi on the cap. Then listen carefully and look with a light. If it's mainly on top of the engine, keep an eye on the intake gasket area and any hoses. This is your best bet of finding the leak, because trying to find it with the engine running can cause burns and you can't hear it leaking.

While going down highway getting hot and losing power.

Loss of power is likely caused by overheat condition. Check your coolant level, thermostat operation(both upper and lower radiator hoses should feel hot), fan motor/clutch operation and radiator cap for proper pressure retention. Also, pressure test cooling system if coolant is leaking out.

Overheating leaking

The overheating probably came from the coolant being too low. The coolant in the reservoir won't go back into the radiator if the coolant in the radiator is too low. Until you get it fixed, check and fill up the radiator every time you want to use it. Overheating is very bad for engines and can cause expensive engine repairs.
Where is it leaking, from the engine or the radiator? You didn't say, but wherever it is leaking is the place to start. If at the radiator, and it is not a loose or leaking hose, I would be looking for a new radiator. If it is leaking at the front of the engine and dripping down from there, you could have a bad water pump. This could be an expensive repair at a shop-not the pump itself-they are not too expensive-but the labor cost in replacing a water pump will add up.

The thermostat would not cause it to leak. But when all is said and done, you will want a new thermostat, after the leak is fixed. They are very cheap and it is just good insurance.

Why is my dodge ram overheating?

Sensor would just cause a check engine light and radiator caps hardly ever go bad. It's possible you put the thermostat in upside down. Also possible that a hose is clogged. More than likely you have a massive air bubble trapped in the engine block.

Engine Overheating

It is one of he things you mentioned.
LEAK: Check the water pump itself. The seal might be gone.
CIRCULATION: Check water pump and thermostat.

I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. It pings with mild acceleration but does not use oil like with plenum leak. I do have to add coolant once every other month(just to fill the resivior). Any ideas?

Ok here is what I recommend check all of your hoses the coolant runs through for leaks make sure it is not leaking by the thermostat if leaking around it get a new one at a parts store they dont cost very much check the radiator for leaks too sometimes the fins on it can be nicked just rite making the radiator leak then if not found you could possible have cracked heads which might cost a pretty penny to fix but I wish you the best of luck

Dodge 2002 Grand Caravan V6 3.3 engine overheating/no cabin heat.

Replace the bad radiator hose first.  Second- get you special formulated anti-freeze dye from the auto store and pour it into the radiator.  Third- make sure you got all the air pockets out of your system, cause the coolant system won't work with air pockets in it.  Fourth- Check for leaks by looking for the colored dye.  If it's not the radiator hose, then could possibly be a pin hole in your radiator.  Would suggest replacing all the radiator hoses at the same time while you got the coolant system disconnected, cause you don't want to have to come back and replace another hose in a few months.

Dodge Caravan 1990 coolant leak..

do not put water in your radiator. Use 50% mix of antifreeze and water or you will corrode your engine. Add coolant mix to cold engine. Fill the reservoir and the radiator. Warm up eninge while looking for the source of the leak. If lucky, it will be the lower radiator hose. Easy repair. If it's the engine block, big problem. Let us know what you find.
