Transmission fluid is the lubricant for all the moving parts that make up your vehicle's transmission. Due to the heat generated in the transmission, the fluid can break down over time. What type of transmission fluid you need depends on your vehicle. Your car's manual provides transmission fluid service requirements. Regular transmission service is necessary to keep your car on the road. That's why O'Reilly Auto Parts has the transmission fluid your vehicle needs. email me for more information [email protected]
My service manual for a 90-93 Passat makes no mention of a VR-6 engine but here's what it says for the regular auto transmission.
Loosen the bottom pan bolts and let the old fluid drain into a catch pan. Remove it and clean it . Replace the strainer (filter) if it can't be cleaned or is damaged. Replace the pan gasket, be sure the 4 corner gasket spacers are in place before tightening the bolts.Torques are 71 in-lbs for the filter and 89 in-lbs for the pan bolts.
To check the fluid level, the engine and trans must have a minimum of 6 miles of driving on them before the level is checked. The engine is running when you check it. The 20*C mark is the cold level.
VW recommends this be done every 2 years or 30,000 miles.
Right next to the plug that you removed that drained the transmission fluid is another plug, which is used to fill the transmission with fluid. You will need some type of hand pump and a reservoir to hold the transmission fluid. Parts stores sell a small pump that screws onto the top of gallon sized gear lube bottles. This would be ideal, since it has the hoses necessary to transfer the fluid from the reservoir or bottle, to the transmission. Pump fluid into the transmission until a little begins to run out of the fill hole. replace the plug in the transmission and start the engine, let it warm up, then move the gearshiftthru all the gears. Put the transmission in neutral and check the fluid level with the dipstick under the hood. If you decide to replace the fluid with fresh fluid, use only fluid designated for your vehicle to avoid damage to the transmission.
Take the measuring stick from sleeve, place a funnel into sleeve (two dollars at your favorite auto parts) and add tranny fluid to level. Do not overfill.
hi there i prosume its an auto if so there are 3 plugs at the rear of the box by the bell housing in a row going up you have to access them from underneath and dont forget its a special fluid,
the trans fluid can only be serviced through a standpipe in the pan with car in the air and trans at an exact temp,<needs to be on a monitor computer> it also uses special fluid not any of the normal fluids. this fluid is suposed to be "lifetime" fluid that doesn't need servicing unless there is a leak or a trans failure.
this procedure is not recommended, first of all it is not gear oil. it is automatic transmission fluid. this is why VW has made it difficult for the incorrect fluid being added. also the fluid is added from the bottom of the transmission and is only added if the transmission is at a certain temperature.
