My 2000 Firebird automatic is having the same problem, but no engine codes showing up...
Just will not go into 4th gear. The transmission had parts recently replacedand also the gear box, but still doing the same thing...

We nw suspect it's the computer... How do we fix this?
If it's the computer, then how do we fix the computer??
Any ideas??

You have to scan it. The transmission is shifted by the computer and if it detects a problem, it defaults to 2nd gear and will not shift.

Can't do anything more without codes.

1995 chevy regular cab 4.3l v6 2wd wont go into overdrive

Sounds like it is stuck in second gear. Overdrive only drops rpm by a couple hundred. In third gears you should still be less than 3,000 rpm.

Second gear is a default gear when the transmission is in limp mode. Is the check engine light on? Does it shift if you manual shift through the gears with the gear selector?

I have a 95 silverado c1500 with 4l60e trans and it wont go into overdrive

overdrive is the fourth gear.D1,D2,D3,D4 now drive truck at 80 kmh
cruise at steady speed no fuel pedal movement, downshift from D4 to D3 you should feel RPM raise .. after push brake pedal a little you should see RPM raise 300 to 400 rpm.
shift pattern is 1st gear ,second gear,3rd gear and lock up(torque converter clutch). 4th gear with lock up
hope it helps

Overdrive

Probably a shift solinoid in the gear box. My commodore has 2 (1st & 2nd) & (3rd & 4th) my 3 / 4 solinoid went so went 1st 2nd 3rd but not to 4th until I replaced it.

My 2001 jeep grand cherokee wont shift into 4th it only goes to third what would cause the 4th gear to not engage

There are several things that could cause that.
> Replacement transmission not equipped with overdrive
> Overdrive solenoid in replacement transmission defective
> Overdrive control circuits damaged or loose pins or connections.
> Gear shift linkage or cable out of adjustment
> Transmission range sensor malfunction or out of adjustment

Since you have a computer-controlled transmission, it would be better to ask the onboard computer that question....you will probably get a much more definitive answer.

My 96 jimmy studders and does not want to change to the 4th gear when in drive, when in overdrive it wont change to 5th gear(overdrive)will the tps sensor do that

Make sure the engine is running right, sometimes they wont shift if the engine is missing or losing vacuum. Sounds like the computer system is sensing there is not enough torque to shift into the higher gears so it is preventing it. This could be caused by your engine not running right under load, bad gas, bad plugs or something that is causing your engine to miss under load

Just want to know which gear is the right gear.

the d with the circle around it is overdrive. the d without the circle is drive. overdrive is designed with highway use in mind. ideally, overdrive is for the highway and drive is for the city.... as far as i understand it.
