I replaced the stator and pickup coil this year and ran great but had an oil leak. current problem began after I replaced the stator cover gasket again. I don't know if the current problem is related. I have checked fuel filters and cap, air intake etc.

It would be WONDERFUL if your existing gasket did NOT have all the appropriate PASSAGES open (but
that's not the way to bet your ENGINE's health).
Look very closely at (ALL) the oil passages.
What you are describing sounds like OIL FAILURE
seizures... Your engine cannot do those many
times before the situation will become unrecoverable.
Last place you were working is ALWAYS a good place to start. Probe deeply into the oil passages and look for OLD gasket parts that could have fallen inside.
Use air pressure and a good SOLVENT to clean
your parts before reassembly

Does the check engine light come on when it starts to miss?

PO 171 indicates a lean condition in bank 1 or the same side of the engine as the first cylinder , usually it is caused by a vacuum leak some where check to make sure that even the smallest of vacuum hoses are in good condition and not leaking

the valve cover, requiring the removal of 4 to eight bolts, easy enough for the novice to remove and replace.
is the uppermost piece of the engine under all the hose's and wire's that run a muck. the head gasket on the other hand requires the removal of all that can be seen as you peer under the hood.if it is just an oil leak it should not require a head gasket .
my suggestion would be to use an engine degreaser
such as gunk or Castor oil brand follow there instructions.and then drive the vehicle 20 minutes or so and look for fresh oil to determine exactly where the leak is coming from

Fuel injected or carb? Make sure fuel line itself is clear. Some pumps are designed to self regulate (carb systems) some continually pump and a psi regulator sends back the excess fuel back to the tank (fuel inj systems) If the line is obstructed then pump can't deliver fuel fulltime.
If you think pump is not on consistent, try running a dedicated wire through a switch directly to the pump. If it works then you are looking for an electrical fault going to pump. Good luck.
