I put the battery in backwards now the battery won't hold a charge and the radio won't work I've put on new battery and alternator. Battery still wont hold a charge. What do I do.

Sounds to me like you fried your electrical system your best bet is to take it to an automotive electrical specialist and let them know what happened and see if they are able to fix it for you

Sounds like you blew the voltage regulator in the alternator so test for volt output while engine is running with a simple Walmart multimeter $10, the output should be 13-14.5 volts with heater fan on high and all lights on and engine running at idle, if not change alternator

Check fuses & realays sounds lik you have shorted one or 2 out & if none check wire from alternator to battery

Check all your fuses. you blew some. Some fuses are necessary to turn things OFF as well as on, so if you are lucky, replace all blown fuses (including the really big ones and fusible links near the battery) and it will be fine. If you are unlucky, components like the alternator or radio or lcd displays can be permanently damaged by a reverse short. start with fuse checks and see whats blown. when all fuses are good and all items have proper power, then see what still is bad.

You may have blown a fuse. If you can start the car, and you have a volt meter, check the battery voltage before you start the car and after it’s started. Should be 12v roughly before starting and around 13.8-14.4 while started. If the voltage goes below 12v your alternator isn’t charging the battery

sounds like a 12V drain on the system, like a trunk or glove box light that won't shut off.> Could be many. many other reasons why. The way I would find the draining circuit would be to remove the neg cable of the battery. I then would connect a 12V test light between the neg battery TERMINAL and the neg battery CABLE. With a 12V drain the light will shine. I would install into the light a 9V battery powered recepticle to hold computer and radio station memory. Then I remove fuses 1 at a time, then reinstall, at the same time looking for the 12V light to go out. Hope this helps.

Check all your fuses if you had a system failure it could have blown a fuse. I am not sure on your vehicle where the fuse is in the car or under the hood it could also have a relay. You can check your alternator by checking the voltage at the back of the alternator where the big wire bolts on. You should have 14+ volts at the alternator.

HI. you may have a battery drain issue that is sapping your battery overnight.

Here is the procedure I use to isolate a battery drain. Remove negative battery cable from the battery. Using a 12-volt test light, hook one end to the negative battery post the other end to the negative battery cable you just disconnected. The test light will glow or "light" if there is a drain. If the "light or glow" is faint, that is probably normal draw for the clock or computer. If the "light or glow" is bright, then there is a large drain. That should be corrected. Now start removing and replacing the fuses one by one until the light goes out; that one will be the circuit with the drain. Remember to hold in the button in the door jam for the interior lights.

You must have a bad gound somewhere or faulty wiring. Your not able to get current from your new alternator over to your new battery properly.
Source could be poor or dirty conections, a corroded ground wire or a bad conector at the alternator itself.

Replace the large wire on the back of the alternator,with a new one,it comes off the back to the positive side of the battery,leave the old one on the alternator.

Battery wont stay charged


If the alternator is good and the battery is new, then something is draining the battery while it's parked. In the old days people left their headlights, radio or something on and this drained the battery. Now a days this is not as big a problem with 5 minute timers that turn off lights if you forget. I would take it back to whomever did the alternator work for an answer. How old is the battery? You can take it to see if it can't hold a charge any longer. In my experience, most batteries don't seem to hold a charge after about two years. Did anyone do some custom work in your car that requires electricity? It could be this extra stuff is draining the battery.

Head lights and radio wont come on plus when I remove the negative terminal car dies. Brand new battery wont hold charge HELP!!!!


Never disconnect a battery with the engine running or when key is on. You can cause a spark (even on the negative) which can cause a battery explosion, and/or you can easily fry the fragile computerized electronics if a power surge were to occur.
That being said, what you did was prove that the new alternator is not putting out any current. Check all your fuses in the power distribution box. Also, a loose or poor connection on the battery or alternator may be the problem. Check that your battery cables still appear in good shape. Check the ground for the battery, and all the engine grounds you can see. Possibly one or more of the maxi-fuses in the distribution box may have blown.
Don't try jumpstarting the car. Take the battery off and have it fully charged up. Then you can resume checking for why the alternator is not working. Good luck.

Battery keeps dying


Battery failure can be caused by multitudes of issues but the two most prevalent are.
1. Bad battery or aged battery. The battery itself if old can have a dead cell.. this means an area of the battery isnt functioniong properly. Its a sealed batter so no way to fix just the area. The battery would need to be replaced. Look for corosion on the terminals, tight connections, and any leakage around the battery of fluids. DONT ADD WATER to battery as this is not advised for newere sealed batteries. A battery will not hold a charge with a bad cell.. So it may charge a bit but will die again after a short period.

2. The alternator is the item that recharges your battery during driving. It creates enough voltage to run the car and then put extra back into the battery. If its bad it wont charge the battery. If you ve noticed your lights dimming, flickering, flashing. Static or hum in radio, etc. then it could indicate a bad alternator.

3. A loose serpentine belt can cause the alternator to not function properly so it should be checked for glazing (very shiny) or cracked. You might hear a squeal at start up of the motor with a loose or damaged belt.


Your local autoparts store has a system that will place the charging system (Battery adn Alternator) under a load. This will help diagnose if the alternator is producing enough current or if the battery is holding that charge. The diagnosis is free and Autozone, Advance, and Oreilly all perform this at curbside.. You dont have to get your hands dirty and they can tell you the issue. If battery they offer free battery installation with battery purchase. If alternator and you are handy with DIY.. you can change yourself with relative ease.

sound like bad battery cables.replace them.the positive battery cable is old and have a lot of resistance not allowing power to the alternator to charge battery.if battery cable good check alternator connector wires.make sure they are not damage also check alternator fuse and fuse link.turn off radio before removing battery wires so you wont lose radio code.
