Not certain as you didn't say the year model of the car. Connect a vacuum gauge to a good source of engine vacuum. Turn the distributor with it running till you get the highest vacuum reading adjust idle and mixture also till you get to the correct idle speed, with the highest vacuum reading you can get with the idle set at the correct RPM. Also adjust the mixture screw to make the highest vacuum reading and correct the idle again and then try moving the timing still more till you find the highest vacuum and smoothest idle, at the correct RPM. Then turn the mixture screw in slightly till the engine sounds just a little rough then watching the vacuum gauge turn the timing again adjusting the idle screw as need to keep it right. Very important to start out with a good and fully charged battery. Any extra loads turned off. If the car is automatic. the do it again with a helper holding the brakes as you adjust just the timing with it idling in drive, again get the best vacuum but don't change the mixture unless it seems all wrong.

I just bought a '99 156 & had the same problem. As long as you have the 4 digit code then all you have to do is drive around for an hour (time the 60 mins!!) & providing you have switched the stereo "on" at the beginning the " - - - - " will appear on the front at 60mins. Then just type in the digits! The Alfa has this "anti theft" device on the stereo which also means every time the battery is disconnected you have to drive around for an hour before you do it again!

get your vehicle to a garage and get them to check your handbrake cable(may need adjusting) and rear brakes(new brake pads?) or check the parts yourself and replace or adjust as required. do you have the car manual in the glovebox?
