I have a 1994 Caprice Classic with a 5.7L LT1 police intercetor engine, I have replaced my water pump and my thermostat but my car still overheats because my fans aren't kicking on, is there a sensor that controls when the fans kick on? Possibly the one on the front of the water pump?
Do this test with the key in run but engine off unplug the ECT (engine coolant temp.) sensor, if the fans turn on (does this by default) the system is ok, if not then check the Fan relay. Also look for burning of the electrical connections to the cooling fans.
If the dashboard has a temperature gauge ... and it is working ... then the coolant temperature sensor is working. I am not a Chevy expert, and do not know for sure what the control mechanism is to turn the fans on... but I would be checking all the related fuses and relays for both fans that are in the fuse/relay box under the hood. I would also direct jumper the fans from the battery to be sure they are both operational.
You know where the coolant sensor is ... but I attached a photo just in case
There is a ECT - engine coolant temp sensor that provides coolant temp info to the PCM - engine computer . Logic programmed into the PCM ,when the coolant temp reaches 213 degress the PCM energizes relays that control the fans . Rather then guess an just replacing the sensor ,take it to a qualified repair shop.

you have a burnt fan relay...if it were my car i ould run a jumper to the fuse panel so that when you turn the key on the fan will also come on and run.its not hard to do and it will stop the car from overheating

If its in the line its self just cut the line in two and take some fuel line hose, the right diameter, slip it over the line with a couple of clamps and that should fix it. Theres not much pressure there and its a cheap fix.
SOURCE: Where is the IAT Sensor
It is on the air duct that goes into the engine. You will see a two wire connector w/ a sensor about 7 inches from the throttle body on the air duct. This is it.

The fans won't kick on then you need to replace the coolant temp sensor this runs your fans.
