Check the 15 amp fuse on your EFI. It's the bottom one close to door post. The fuse tab on mine melted and was not making contact so I cut the wires from the fuse panel and put female ends on them to accept a fuse. Works fine. I've been building these Toyota Pickups with 22R and 22RE for what feels like a 100 years. I even have a new engine I put 125 miles on still on the engine stand here in my garage. Lot's of spare parts too. I've pulled 7 of them apart in the past just to keep one on the road. You can't find them any more.

If its fuel injected i suggest you turn the key to the ON position wait two seconds then do it again a few times. that will prime the gas filter. then try to start car

Check your set screw, and make sure it's not too low. Adjust the screw to the point that where it idles at the proper speed. Also, maybe check your throttle cable for too much slack.

Good explanation of symptoms.Thank you.

No assumptions.
Diagnose problem.
Pinch off the fuel return line.
Check fuel pressure--I don't wanna!PITA!
The fuel pump won't run if the fuel filter is plugged up.
Toyota's have a gas tank drain plug!!!!!!!!!
My '84 takes a 3/8 " ratchet. Cool.

There may be a fuel pump relay that is toast,but I suspect the filter,off hand.
A plugged filter will overwork the pump and cause the engine to run rich.

Bmw 1988 325is engine stops running sometimes - not lack of fuel or battery, new fuel pump. Sometimes wont start, starter motor working well, good battery. Replaced fuel pump - same deal.

The number one problem with these cars is with clogged fuel filters. They must be changed regularly. When you say it won't start, do you mean it cranks but won't fire? That could be a fuel pressure problem due to a clogged filter.

22r Carb. misses at ide

Dripping fuel could indicate a badly adjusted float,bad needle and seat,or possibly to much fuel pressure off the pump,if your using a mechanical fuel pump make sure the return line to the gas tank isn't plugged,if your usining an electric fuel pump make sure you have a working pressure regulator,my personal opinion on remanufactred stock carbs isn't very high,if you can return the carb I would highly reccomend replacing it with a Weber 38 DGES,you can get a Toyota conversion kit for around the same cost as a remaned stock carb.

1988 toyota p/u 22r carb,

Hello,
Sounds like you have a bad carb. While the choke is on and active it sucks enough gas into the engine to keep it running. To test this problem run the vehicle until it is up to operating temp. Give it the gas and see if it does the miss and sputter thing. Then using a can of either of other flamable carb cleaner spray some into the air cleaner nozzle while the engine is acting up. If it smooths out for a few seconds the the carb is not gertting enough fuel at high rpm. rebuild the carburator paying attention to the fuel ports in case one or more are plugged up. Also look at the fuel level float and see it it is set at the proper height. It has been a while since working on a 22r carb, but I am not sure if thereis a fuel bowl window that you can look at to see the fuel level with a flashlight. it should be at or slightly above the dot on the glass window in the carb. If low it is a fuel problem. Also while working on it check the pressure on the fuel line at the carb. Your service manual should have a recommended pressure for the carb. Regards, rcampsr

1988 2wd 22r toyota pickup not idling

You might check the PCV valve and grommet,I'm assuming it's EFI,if the valve isn't sealed tight it will cause the motor die at lower RPM's

1986 Toyota 4X4 22r Engine

Hello;
It sounds as if you have a couple of possible problems. First could be the fuel pump. If yoou disconnect the fuel line, put the line in a jar and crank the engine over, you should get a pint in 15 seconds or so. Also check the pressure, should have around 5 psi. Secondly, you may have a vacuum hose cracked, broken, or leaking. Check your hoses and also the carbureator for leaks.
Hope this helps;
Thanks;

Troubleshooting 1988 Toyota Pickup No Start

If you have a tps and air flow meter you have a 22re fuel injection.
Check for codes by jumping TE1 and E1 or jumping diagnosis connector.

a9fb36c.gif

The 22re will run with out the tps(throttle position sensor) plugged in. But it will not run with the air flow meter unplugged. The air flow meter controls the fuel pumps voltage.
go to http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/AFM/index.shtml
This page tell you how to test those sensors. Then we can go from there.

The fuel pressure regulator may be shot also, but we will see.

I hope this was helpful.
