It cold be that the trans is only working to start off because of something to do with your overdrive. The computer is literally putting the trans into limp home mode and why you have no drive to get the vehicle moving, yet it will move in second. I've seen this many times, yet you say it will have drive after 15 mph. Really, this makes no sense, it should still be in limp home mode and no drive. If you can get speed up and have overdrive, yet the OD is intermittent or feels like slippage somewhat, then your overdrive clutch assembly, hub and band are burnt. Have it checked by a transmission shop but don't tell them what you were just told by me. Let them figure it out with testing equipment. It's ,ore reliable than the word of mouth thing.
Most hub nuts are usually standard thread but they can be fitted to a ridiculously high torque setting. This means they can be a ******* to get off. The torque is somewhere around 175Nm, (130ft lbs).
The last hub nut I had to deal with needed a seriously heavy duty breaker bar. A high range torque gun can also be effective.
hub studs are just a press in fit . the replacement can usually be done with out the hub removal. remove the drum /disc rotor
using a hammer and punch drive the broken stud out. place new stud in position and pull in to place using nut and spacers to get it home .
if you can remove the hub and drive the broken stud out . fit new stud and place the hub over something like a piece of pipe /socket the new stud in the pipe or socket) that is on something solid and hammer the new stud home.
Warn Hubs Installation A truck or SUV with a four-wheel drive suspension uses locking hubs on the front wheels to engage or disengage the front axle shafts from the hubs. This way, you can drive the truck normally with just rear-wheel drive, or engage four-wheel drive mode when you want to drive off-road. These hubs can wear out, and one improvement is to install a set of Warn hubs. Installing a set of Warn hubs takes about an hour. 1.Park the truck and put on the parking brake. Lift the front of the truck with the jack and put the jack stands under the front axle. Take off the front wheels with the tire iron and put them to the side. 2.Disengage the locking hubs using your hands by turning the knob on the hubs. Remove the snap rings holding the hub locks in place with the snap-ring pliers. Pull the hub off the axle. 3.Install the lock ring wheel from the Warn hub kit in the axle with the factory snap ring and the snap-ring pliers. 4.Make sure the Warn locking cap dial is turned to the "Free' position. Install the locking cap onto the lock ring wheel and hub body with a hex-head key. Reinstall the front wheels with the tire iron and lower the vehicle off the jack stands with the jack. RAVE says the following: 1) Release ABS Sensor harness grommet from inner wing valance and disconnect multi plug. 2) Raise front of vehicle. 3) Remove road wheel. 4) Pull ABS Sensor harness through aperture into wheel arch. 5) Release harness from brackets on inner wing valance, suspension turret and front hub. 6) Release stake from drive shaft nut 7) Remove drive shaft nut with assistance & discard. 8) Remove front brake disk (Remove calliper, pad holder, screw and tap to remove) 9) Remove 4 bolts securing wheel hub to steering knuckle. 10) Release wheel hub from steering knuckle then remove wheel hub and drive shaft assembly from axle. DO NOT REMOVE ABS SENSOR FROM HUB. HUB AND SENSOR ARE SUPPLIED AS AN ASSEMBLY. 11) Position the wheel hub and drive shaft on a press, place supports beneath the wheel studs and press the drive shaft from the wheel hub. 12) Remove drive shaft oil seal from axle casing.
Refit is mostly the reverse, you need to take care to lubricate things in the right places and put loctite on the drive shaft and locate the loom and torque everything right.
The self locking hubs (or automatic hubs) are actuated by vacuum. The vacuum line is usually on the driver's side of the differential, towards the front of the vehicle on Toys. You might want to check it out and see if it's cracked, broken, or gone.
I would check out the hubs and the drive axles first before changing the transfer case but I would do a differential service also if you never had it done since you have owned the car a 91 aerostar that is all wheel drive I thought I had the same problem and I replaced both hubs and one drive axle
