hi,

let me clarify the belt names for you before that, the fan or serpentine belt is the belt which all the accessories run on like the alternator and power steering pump and is different from the timing belt completely. the timing belt is hidden away and you cannot see it on most cars and keeps the camshaft in sequence with the crankshaft, Im not entirely sure but I believe ford V6s have a timing chain. heres the deal, the idler tensioner pulley has to have some tension put on it to bend it up and out of the way while you place the serpentine belt, study the ider tensioner pulley closely and the diagram under the hood, the idler pulley has a large bolt in the middle which you have to put a socket and wrench on .using force against the spring loaded pulley, either push down or up on the pulley with the wrench to temporarily give you the clearance needed to set the belt and gently release, (having a helper helps) once you doublecheck that the belt is PERFECT then start the car. My 83 LTD's idler pulley is adjusted with a bolt, I believed they have changed it to the spring loaded design that I spoke about above, if its the spring loaded design, that should do it,
good luck

J

SOURCE: 97 Taurus Belt tensioner does not lossen the belt

There should be a square big enough to fit a 3/8" drive ratchet into on the tensioner (should be closest to the pulley), insert the ratchet into that square, then try turning the tensioner, this should release the pressure on the serpentine belt. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Belt Tensioner located on 2000 ford Escort zx2

On the right side of the pulleys, there should be 3 top, middle, and bottom. The middle, smaller one, is the tensioner.

2000 ford Taurus belt replacement

The belt is held in tension by a speing loaded roller thet is a part of a spring tensioner,
The tensioner needs to be retracted to remove the fension so the belt can be removed.

To remove the tension, you put the proper size socket onto the bolt head that is on the center of the tensioner roller. Attach a breaker bar to the socket and lever the tensioner back to losen the tension on the belt (be careful there is a lot of spring force to deal with )

How do I release the tension on the serpentine belt. I tried turning the center bolt on the tensioner clockwise and counterclockwise with no results. The bolt won't move. I am trying to replace the dead...

You have a belt tensioner on this car. It simply keeps the belt stretched at the max at a very tight fit. You will notice a 3/8" square hole in the middle of the housing. That is were a 3/8 ratchet will be placed to apply pressure to releive the tensioner to remove the belt

hELLO THERE:
NO YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOOSEN THIS BOLT LOOK FOR THE SMALL SQUARE HOLE THAT A SOCKET EXTENSION FITS INTO THIS IS THE HOLE THAT YOU ARE WANTING TO USE AND THEN PUSH IT OVER TO THE DRIVERS SIDE TO MAKE THE TENSIONER LOOSEN THE TENSION ON THE BELT SO YOU CAN REMOVE IT OK

How do i tighten the belt tension after i have replaced the alternator on my 2006 ford taurus, 3.0L, V6

The same way you took the tension off the belt to get it off is the same way to put it back on.
okay!all you have to do is put a rachet on the bolt with the proper size socket and pull the tensioner while you put the belt on then you let go and the spring will pull it back tight.
If this is not happening then you need a new tensioner.
