Try the brake pedal switch first common prob. you should be able to hear a click from the gear lever when the brake pedal is applied to disengage the park lock solenoid if not its more than likeley the pedal switch or second choice the release solenoid on the jgate/gear lever

look carefully for the trim screw on the bottom side of the light and remove it, from there carefully pry the lens straight towards you It wil pop right off just fine.

i have one of these cars a 4 lt sovereign but i can honestly say i have never touched it ,try from underneath first to see if the outer sheaf has come away from a clamp ?? but i do feel from re reading the question the fault lies under the gearchange ,like the switch mechanism and someone has had one over the top and forced the mechanism.Dont drink and drive because you spill it

can you fold down the back of the seat and pull the release handle? you could jack it up and power it up at the starter
