You have to remove the glove box as it is behind it. Then there is a cover you have to remove with a couple screws.

I recently acquired a 2006 Mitsubishi Galant SE. I attempted to change the cabin air filter only to discover the location is sealed. How do I change the filter?

This filter is an optional item and may or may not be dealer installed.

The procedures in this article are typical of most Misubishi vehicles.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1. The filter is located behind the glove compartment. Open the glove compartment, (disconnect damper rod, if equipped) push on the sides while pulling down to release the latches. Allow the glove box to swing down on its hinges.

2. Remove the 2 air filter screws.

Some vehicles may not have an installed cabin air filter, but may have a sealed filter compartment. In such cases, the sealed compartment will need to be punched-out and a new air filter frame acquired before a cabin air filter can be installed.
NOTE:
The filter is optional and may not be installed in all vehicles. If the filter compartment is sealed as shown, use a flat head screwdriver to punch through the perforated plastic cover. Some vehicles may not have the filter frame pre-installed in the compartment. If so, accquire the filter frame before installing filter element.

3. Remove cabin air filter. Remove the old filter frame (if present) by sliding it out towards you. Remove old filter from its frame and install new filter, ensuring that Air Flow arrow is pointing down.

4. Install in reverse order.

Removing the cabin air filter on a 2001 mitsubishi galant

Open the glove box and empty the contents. gently push the glove box to the left and slide the stop toward you. Now slide the box to the right to get the left stop unhooked. Letting the glove box hang, look at the long thin plate on the fan shroud and undo the two screws holding it in. Now you can slide the cabin filter tray out of the fan shroud and replace the paper element. If you look at the fan shroud and see the rectangular slot but there are no screws in it , the cabin air filter has not been installed in your model. The rectangle can be cut out with an Exacto knife and the cabin air filter can be installed in the slot. You can purchase the cabin air filter tray, cabin air filter, and mounting screws at the Misubishi dealer. I purchased one out of an Eclipse at a salvage yard for $5 , washed it, and installed a new $10 dollar aftermarket paper element. I no longer have dust on my dash and it only cost $15.

How to change cabin air filter?

Place the ignition switch in the Off position, remove the supplemental inflatable restraint fuse from the rear fuse panel. On 1997 models, the rear fuse panel is located in the luggage compartment. On the 1998-2003 models, the rear fuse panel is located under the rear seat. Remove the two retaining screws from the rear edge of the left sound
insulator. Push in on the snap tabs to release the insulator. Disconnect the left sound insulator electrical connectors, then remove the insulator. Twist the shift cable grommet and position away from the cabin air filter access door. It may be necessary to cut the tie strap and peel back the foam insulation to position the grommet away from the door. Remove the cabin air filter access cover from the A/C and heater module.

Remove the tape, then pull out the first cabin air filter element using the filter tab. Remove the tape, then pull out the second cabin air filter element using the filter tab. Remove the tape, then pull out the third cabin air filter element using the filter tab.

To ease installation, lubricate the new filter guides with silicon spray. Install the first clean air filter into the case. Using a long thin blade screw driver and filter tab, raise the filter until it is parallel with the A/C and heater module. Ensure the leading edge of the filter engages the filter case holding rib. Engage the new second cabin air filter in the tab of the first filter. Slide the second filter into the remaining channels of the first filter. Using the filter tab, raise the filter until it is parallel
with the A/C and heater module. Ensure the leading edge of the filter engages the filter case holding rib. Engage the third new cabin air filter in the tab of the second filter. Slide the third filter into the remaining channels of the second filter. Fold the tab of the second filter down. Fold the tab of the third filter up and over the second filter.

Install the A/C and heater module filter cover. Ensure the cover is properly seated. position the shift cable grommet. Position the left sound insulator to the instrument panel, then connect the electrical connectors. Install the left sound insulator fasteners. Torque the fasteners to 18 inch lbs. Be sure to install the fasteners in the proper locations, then install the SIR fuse. From a position off to the side of the air bag module, place the ignition switch in the "On" position. The air bag warning lamp should flash 7 times and then turn Off. Place the ignition switch in the "Off" position.

Location of cabin air filter

It can have a cabin air filter, but most vehicles ship without it. Either way, you can access the cabin air filter housing by opening the glove box all the way (squeeze the sides so it clears the stops).

The filters are around $15 at the dealer.

Whether or not there's a cabin filter installed, make sure you're also following Chrysler's recommendations in the owner's manual—running the air on recirculate all the time will encourage mold and bacteria to grow.

Good luck

Remove glove box and in cabin microfilter door will be right there. Note on some Xterras there is no filter installed and the box will need to be cut out in order to install kit. This is a fairly easy task that can be done in the vehicle. Just follow the directions and you should be ok.
