SOURCE: vacuum schematic

The vacuum schematic is printed on a white decal and is supposed to be affixed to the underside of your hood or on your core support(above your radiator).

Remove valve covers, drain radiator. remove hoses& linkage, distributor, intake manifold, loosen rockers and remove pushrods. disconnect exhaust pipes (dont worry too much if a stud breaks, you can replace them once out of car.) remove exhaust manifolds, remove head bolts. take heads off. clean off all surfaces and don't get any debris in engine. Get a manual if this is scary...Replace in reverse order. Check heads for cracks between valves, head torque is 65lbs, intake is anything around 30. Mark distributor so you can put it back in exactly like it came out...once nearly in, they usually stop. keep light hand pressure on it and turn engine by hand & it will drop the rest of the way in. tighten rockers till you can just spin the pushrod Move engine position to do any that have spring tension. adjust lash running by loosening till they clatter, turning till no noise and 1/2 turn further. When adjusting, oil will go everywhere so do it somewhere you can make a mess.

Hello. The only legal way to get this decal is to pass a smog test. Good luck with it. Joe

What would cause my 84 monte carlo 305 only fire on 4 cylinder

Bad pick up coil in distributor or worn shaft. The wires on the pick up coil should have 500 ohms to 1500 ohms resistance.
Move the wires and vacuum advance while testing, reading should not change. Then test resistance from one coil pick up wire to distributor housing this should be infinity.
Wiggle the shaft and see if there is any sideways movement.

I have a 85 chevy elcamino. It has a 305 engine in it that needs to be replaced, along with the transmission. I have a friend that will give me a early to mid 90s chevy caprice with a 350. Do you think that...

Providing that the valve covers are the same, the engine should fit. It would be easiest if both transmissions were identical but you can use a 350, 400 or even a 700r4 in there with some mods and a crossmember move and possibly a driveshaft mod. You will probably want to swap intake manifolds and all brackets for stuff up front as well.

try tightening the bolts that hold the carb to the engine; very common vacuum leak location.
