Question about 2002 Ford Taurus

I was changing a water pump on a 2002 taurus while taking a water hose off the motor i observed the water inlet has a hole at the bottom of it. Can it be replaced or repaired

have you check the tunnel between the kidney shaped sump and the well that the rotor motor locks into, often chips of crockery,seeds etc get caught in here and reduce the flow rate .You will need to remove the rotor motor,its easy, lift out racks then sprayarm to expose rotor motor turn locking ring to release stainless sieve lift out, then turn motor assembly anti clockwise and lift out.With something flexible eg 4mm insulated wire push it through tunnel from sump to motor well.

SERVICE PROCEDURE: THE POWER STEERING FLUID REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE IS A TWO-STAGE PROCESS: FIRST, FLUSHING THE OLD FLUID FROM THE SYSTEM WITH NEW FLUID; AND SECOND, BLEEDING THE SYSTEM TO REMOVE ANY TRAPPED AIR. THE FOLLOWING TWO SEQUENCES OUTLINE THE STEPS IN EACH PROCEDURE.

FLUSHING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM 1. RAISE THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE OFF THE GROUND UNTIL THE WHEELS ARE FREE TO TURN.

2. REMOVE THE FLUID RETURN LINE AT THE PUMP RESERVOIR INLET CONNECTOR.

3. PLUG THE INLET CONNECTOR PORT ON THE PUMP RESERVOIR.

4. POSITION THE FLUID RETURN LINE TOWARD A LARGE CONTAINER IN ORDER TO CATCH THE DRAINING FLUID.

5. WHILE A SECOND PERSON FILLS THE RESERVOIR WITH NEW LOW TEMPERATURE CLIMATE SERVICE FLUID, START AND RUN THE ENGINE AT IDLE.

6. TURN THE STEERING WHEEL FROM STOP TO STOP.

NOTICE: DO NOT HOLD THE WHEEL AGAINST STOPS WHILE FLUSHING THE SYSTEM. HOLDING STEERING WHEEL AGAINST WHEEL STOPS WILL CAUSE HIGH SYSTEM PRESSURE, OVERHEATING, AND DAMAGE TO THE PUMP AND/OR GEAR. 7. CONTINUE DRAINING UNTIL ALL OF THE OLD FLUID IS CLEARED FROM THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. ADDITION OF APPROXIMATELY 1 QUART OF NEW FLUID WILL BE REQUIRED TO FLUSH SYSTEM.

8. UNPLUG PUMP RESERVOIR INLET AND RECONNECT RETURN LINE.

9. TURN ENGINE OFF, AND FILL RESERVOIR TO THE "FULL COLD" MARK.

10. CONTINUE WITH FOLLOWING PROCEDURE "BLEEDING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM".

BLEEDING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM AFTER REPLACING THE FLUID OR SERVICING THE POWER STEERING HYDRAULIC SYSTEM, YOU MUST BLEED AIR FROM THE SYSTEM. AIR IN THE SYSTEM PREVENTS AN ACCURATE FLUID LEVEL READING, CAUSES PUMP CAVITATION NOISE AND OVER TIME COULD DAMAGE THE PUMP. TO BLEED THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM PROCEED AS FOLLOWS:

1. BEGIN WITH THE ENGINE OFF, FRONT WHEELS OFF THE GROUND, AND WHEELS TURNED ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT.

2. ADD LOW TEMPERATURE CLIMATE SERVICE FLUID TO THE "FULL COLD" MARK ON THE FLUID LEVEL INDICATOR.

3. BLEED THE SYSTEM BY TURNING THE WHEELS FROM SIDE TO SIDE WITHOUT HITTING STOPS.

IMPORTANT: THIS MAY REQUIRE TURNING THE WHEELS FROM SIDE TO SIDE TWENTY TIMES. ON SYSTEMS WITH LONG RETURN LINES OR FLUID COOLERS, TURNING STEERING WHEEL LOCK-TO-LOCK FORTY TIMES MAY BE REQUIRED. KEEP THE FLUID LEVEL AT THE "FULL COLD" MARK. FLUID WITH AIR IN IT HAS A LIGHT TAN APPEARANCE. THIS AIR MUST BE ELIMINATED FROM THE FLUID BEFORE NORMAL STEERING ACTION CAN BE OBTAINED. 4. START THE ENGINE. WITH THE ENGINE IDLING, RECHECK THE FLUID LEVEL. IF NECESSARY, ADD FLUID TO BRING THE LEVEL TO THE "FULL COLD" MARK.

5. RETURN THE WHEELS TO THE CENTER POSITION. LOWER FRONT WHEELS TO THE GROUND. CONTINUE RUNNING THE ENGINE FOR TWO OR THREE MINUTES.

6. TEST THE VEHICLE TO BE SURE THE STEERING FUNCTIONS NORMALLY AND IS FREE FROM NOISE.

IMPORTANT: INSPECT FOR FLUID LEAKAGE AT CONNECTION POINTS ALONG THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. 7. RECHECK THE FLUID LEVEL AS DESCRIBED IN STEPS 3 AND 4 EXCEPT THAT THE FLUID LEVEL SHOULD NOW BE UP TO THE "FULL HOT" MARK AFTER THE SYSTEM HAS STABILIZED AT ITS NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE.

Removal & Installation 3.0L (2V) To Remove:

  1. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley.
  3. Remove the bolt and the nut and position the roll restrictor bracket out of the way.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  5. Remove the generator.
  6. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  7. Remove the nut, the bolt and the support bracket.
  8. Remove the bolts and the water pump pulley.
  9. Disconnect the water pump inlet hose and the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector.
  10. Remove the bolts and the water pump, and clean the sealing surfaces
To Install:
  1. Install the water pump. Tighten bolts in the sequence shown:
    1. Tighten numbers 1-7 to 18 ft.-lbs. (25 Nm)
    2. Tighten numbers 8-12 to 89 in.-lbs. (10 Nm)
    3. Connect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector and the water pump inlet hose
    4. Install the support bracket.
    5. Install the accessory drive shaft tensioner.
    6. Install the generator.
    7. Install the roll restrictor bracket, bolt and the nut.
    8. Install the water pump pulley.
    9. Install the accessory drive belt.
    10. Connect the battery ground cable.
    11. Fill the engine cooling system.

Hose clamp the bottom hose before you remove upper is fastest. You loose a bit. Or you can drain rad and clamp lower. Be sure to really clean water pump hose side for a good seal

What does it mean when there's no water circulation to the upper hose on a 2002 Ford Taurus wagon and is there a lower thermostat for the lower hose that circulates the water from bottom to top?


There's only one thermostat and if your not circulating antifreeze the thermostat is either stuck closed or your cooling passages are clogged did anyone put stop leak in the motor if so they put in a lot and the engine is blocked buy change the thermostat and see what happens

Losin radiator fluid steamin coming from the bottom of the engine


probably a bad water pump.. steam escaping from the small hole behind the pulley or around the gasket. before changing water pump though, search for exactly where the steam is coming from... could be just a worn hose.

02 taurus no heat - blower works and has new thermostat


I just unclogged heater core on one of these.Take the heater hose near thermostat housing off when engine has cooled. Now on the other side above water pump you will see a hose entering the pump.Take it loose at the pump or a foot or so at a junction near there.
Wrap a white rag around the end of the hose you took off from the thermostat area,so you can see results.Aim this rag end down toward ground.
Take a garden hose(regular pistol grip,not fancy type)and blow water back thru from the water pump hose.THIS will BACKFLUSH dirt and debris out thru the heater core into the rag.
Reconnect hoses and you're done! don-ohio

I have a 2002 ford taurus and antifreeze is leaking cant tell from where but it is getting all over my belt and causing smoke could this be a simple hose or a water pump im at a loss


Hello! It sounds like the water pump is leaking...But first, inspect your hoses and their clamping points...
if you can observe coolant leaking, running from the center of the rear of the water pump then it's time to replace it see diagram below for bolt torquing sequence...Bolts1-7=18 Ft. Lbs....Bolts 8-12= 89 In. Lbs.

I have a 2002 Taurus 3.0 v6 single I have smoke that is rolling out from the hood when driving I looked at the water pump it seems to be leaking at the water pump where it goes into the head on the motor...


It sounds like you have either a leaking water pump or hose near the water pump. Sometimes you can take a small mirror and a light and follow the trail of coolant back up to the source [worth a try anyway] Most water pumps will leak from a small weep hole that is located behind the pulley and it can be hard to see this. Be careful not to overheat the engine as that can cause cylinder head damage, or worse, if it gets hot enough and can make a small problem much bigger and more expensive. Hope this helps!

2002 ford taurus. Radiator overflows but, temp gauge not hot.


It could be both your thermostat and water pump, it could also be an air lock in your cooling system. One way or another, I think pressure is building up in part of the system because its not circulating properly.

When its cool, take the top off your reservoir, give the bottom hose to your radiator a good few squeezes, see if the water goes down a little, if it does, you moved something on and probably cured it.

If not, run the engine up, to get it warm and bleed off any air in the system. (Assuming there are bleed taps in the system)

If that also does nothing, I reckon its your water pump. And if your changing that, I'd suggest changing the thermostat at the same time.

2002 chryler sebring is leaking anti freeze


It depends on where the leak is coming from. If the water pump is leaking, it has a hole on the bottom of it. You will see a trail of dried anti freeze coming from the bottom of it, indicating a bad water pump. It's best to dry everything off, crank it up and let it come to operating temp and check for where the leak is coming from. It may just be an old hose or loose clamp.
