Question about Volvo Cars & Trucks
I have a 2007 volvo s40 2.4i my belt snapped on it. the belt that is the closest to the alternator . when i manually spin the pulley with my hand you can see something on the inside of the alternator spin so thats another reason i believe ite the alternator belt. i can not find anything on the internet about how to replace it..
My brother in law and I changed it without taking anything apart except the fan cover, what you'll need to do is gently use a crobar to release the tensioner pully directly below the alternator, and jam it a bit, then slowly release the old belt, if it's as worn as mine was you'll be fine. Then simply run the new belt starting from the bottom up. There's a great diagram on the weblink below.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Fig. 1: A gauge is recommended, but you can check belt tension with thumb pressure
Fig. 2: Loosen the component's mounting and adjusting bolts slightly to remove or adjust the belt(s)
Fig. 3: Push the component toward the engine and slip off the belt
Fig. 4: Slip the new belt over the pulley
Fig. 5: Pull outward on the component and tighten the mounting bolts

The alternator is loading up too much for some reason.
Had the same issue on my friend's 2001 Mazda Protege. Turned out the voltage regulator in the alternator was faulty. Had the alternator rebuilt. A week later, it acted up again! There is apparently another issue, but I have not been able to figure it out.
Unfortunately, I don't have a clear answer for you, but, one's thing's for sure. Mazda has to stop using crappy Ford electrics in their cars.
