I had the same problem with my 02 Protege 5. After new plugs, wires and a few hours of tinkering around, we found it to be a grounding problem with 1 of the coil packs. There are 2 coil packs on the motor. You can pick one up at Autozone for $30 and they very simple to change out! Good luck!

Heater core is bad. You probably have had to add coolant every so often. Be careful, as I have seen the PCM located below and to the left of the core get wet and then you find yourself with more problems. For now, just bypass the heater core under the hood.

i had a similar problem on my optima it would jump from drive to 3rd. there are 2 sensors called an input and output sensor, on mine they're on the drivers side on top of the tranny. they're easy to replace if you want to do it yourself. getting them tested isn't easy, you have to have the code analyzer hooked and driving when it happens for it to show up. i was in the process of changing mine when i found out the plug that went into it was bad, i fixed it and everything was fine. check a repair manual to identify the sensors and start by checking the connectors 1st.

It could be a problem with the fuel pump or igntion module/ coil pack. The next time it stops, fuel pressure needs to be checked and have the ignition coil pack and module tested at a local parts store.
