I have a manual 02 ford ranger 2.3l and my truck is having problems normally getting into gear/sputtering in any gear. The check engine light has blinked twice 5-10 times while driving. I recently had the spark plugs serviced (2nd and 3rd) and the valves/gaskets replaced. I had also had my hose going to my thermostat bypass replaced. This required my transmission to be removed. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Ratio codes generally indicate a pressure loss & slipping which the computer reads as a gear ratio problem. Likely you need a rebuild.

UPDATE! ! ! Fixed this problem! YES ! ! ! The speed sensors was all that needed replacing. NOT ANY SOLENOIDS ! !. Two of them cost $160 and it solved the problem! Do not buy from the dealers. An after market version is available for $50 each. I was forced to buy dealers.

The forward clutch control valve has a retaining clip that is known to break on these tranny's. This can prevent it from shifting into 4th gear. Good news, the part is five bucks. Bad news, it's in the valve body which takes a few hours to get to. I fixed mine in about 8 hours thanks to great step by step instuctions I found online. Search for "valve body removal taurus tranny". If it's not the retainer clip then it could be one of the solenoids on the valve body. I believe there's one just for 3rd and 4th gear. Good luck
