Last week my check engine light came on Auto zone said it was mass air flow sensor the next day my car would not stay running like it was running out of gas

About two months ago i had the check engine light come on in my 2012 nissan maxima i went to auto zone it read the mass air flow sensor went and had it checked and the filter box of the mass air flow was packed with dog food it was cleaned and the filter replaced which took the check engine light off and then everything was fine.. then last week the light came on again when i was at a stop light it acted as if it wanted to die or i was running out of gas but ran fine when the car was in motion went to auto zone and they tested the light and again it read mass air flow sensor the next day i go to start my car and it wont stay running long enough to even change gears it acts as if its running out of gas and when i push the gas it has no affect like it has no pressure or something.. i replaced the sensor and its still doing the same thing its not the fuel pump because when i push the push start into the on position i hear the fuel pump kick in

The mass air flow sensor can set a few different codes an it doesn't always mean the sensor is bad . Never go to autozone ,they mite get lucky once in a while . You need to take it to a qualified repair shop an have it diagnosed properly .

Testing fuel pressure an flow with a pressure gauge should be done .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeVTZz0o...
Hooking up a professional type scanner an checking sensor data parameters to the PCM should be done also .

So you replaced the sensor and now the light is back on, right? Have you checked the code again to make sure it's still the MAF sensor code? If so, you've got a connector or wiring harness issue.

SOURCE: 1999 pontiac grand prix . will not run

If wiggling the wires cured the code, then one of the wires is broken inside the insulation. Pull on each wire one at a time. look for the colored insulation to stretch, this will be the broken wire. For the other car that wont rev up, this is a common when the catalytic concverter is plugged up. This will also cause MAF codes, and in turn, TRAC OFF light.

  • Faulty mass air flow sensor
    - Intake air leaks
    - Dirty mass air flow sensor
    - Dirty mass air filter
    - Mass air flow sensor harness is open or shorted
    - Mass air flow sensor circuit poor electrical connection
  • Before replacing the mass air flow sensor, try replacing the air filter and cleaning the air flow sensor with low compress air or mass air flow sensor cleaner. Reset code and drive vehicle. If the code comes back, it may be necessary to replaced the mass air flow sensor.

P0171 just replaced mass air flow

p0171 is system to lean ( bank 1 ). did you turn off check engine light with a scanner! if not go to auto-zone and they will erase it for free, then you can see if light stays off. There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.
  • Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
  • Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure. Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1. good-day!!

My car sounds bad. it smells like gas when started. and it runs bad. also the check engine light is blinking

Check engine light is blinking a code, a auto parts store can read codes for you most the time its free, sound like maybe a few diff things, the EGR valve maybe stuck open or shut, or a O2 sensor, or Mass Air Flow Sensor, they do make a mass air flow cleaner thats the only thing you can use on it, the mass air sensor is just after your air filter on the tube that runs to the motor, the O2 sensors are on the pipes before and after the converter. Egr vents the non burnt gas back in your motor to re burn it the pipe coming off the manifold back up to the top of motor should see a egr would have a round diaphram looking thing on it. start with the codes being read at auto zone or O''rillys. i know on that that Rodeo you have to change the PCV valve about every 15,000 mi it vents the air out of the motor, run about $3, worst case senario it jumped time,

Engine running rought at idle won't stay running runs great at higher r.p.m. check eng. light comes on once engine is warmed up.

Take it to Advance Auto or Autozone and they'll read the check engine code. That will give you an idea but it's not perfect. There are many faults that trip the check engine light and I suspect there will be several. Coils or Mass Air Flow sensor would be at the top of my list of suspects. A bS Mass Air Flow sensor will give other codes such as lean or rich or even manifold leak, because the result is the fuel system doesn't provide proper ratio of fuel to air.

Took car to auto zone after check engine light came on and car stalls when cold. Is there anything cheaper then buying a new nass airflow sensor I can try first?

They do make a mass air flow sensor spray cleaner...and it does say MASS Air Flow Sensor Cleaner on the spray can....this would be your cheapest route first. Auto Zone and all other stores sell this product.

I have a 1995 ford taurus engine stalls when idling and smells of gas when accelerating it bucks. Changed fuel filter, could it be mass air flow sensor?

Start with smaller problems and check the fuel pressure regulator, the mass air flow sensor for these vehicles is pretty pricy. Is the check engine light on? If so, head to your nearest auto zone and have them check for trouble codes. If the check engine light isn't on, its not likely your mass air flow sensor

    Check engine light

It might but what exactly are the codes. Before you change the Mass air flow sensor, try cleaning it first with a can of mass flow cleaner.
If your running a oil K&N filter, there could be some oil residue on the sensor. Start with that and change the filter or clean it if it's a K&N.
The O2 sensor's could be bad also, you really need the code's to be sure what sensor is giving you the faulty signal.
Good luck and hope this helps.
