Black smoke in a petrol driven car usually indicates a low air intake problem and fuel and air mixture is a problem or oil in the piston chamber. Diesel cars indicate worn diesel injectors.
Excessive fuel and if turbo operation , failing turbo
check for excessive fuel pressure , leaking injector seals
turbo not operating

I recently had the same issue, but my airbag warning lights also turned on. If this is the case, it might be the clockspring. There is a recall on clocksprings for Caravans 1998 - 2000 I believe. I got it replaced for free in the dealership. Enter your VIN in this site and it will tell you if you are covered in the free replacement warranty.

If you look under the dashboard on the driver's side, there is a fuse panel. Under this panel is the BCM(body control module). There may be a bad relay in the bcm. Worse case scenario is a bad BCM. I hope this information is helpful to you, Good luck.

i had the same problem, i dont remember the name of the piece but its mounted right in between the driver side headlight and the radiator. its a relay that turns the fans on when the car gets hot. its mounted on the body of the car. there should be wires leading from the radiator to the piece im talking about.... good luck I also paid about 35 dollars for the piece

it is located on driverside behind front headlight next to radiator. fuse/relay box is just behind it
