Try the other key, but the problem is in the sensor /reader in the ignition. It is worn and cannot read the resister value on the key. To fix it can cost at least 500 bucks. Override it by puttin in the key and turn to on ..leave on for about 15 min. Turn to off position then to start. The system will be overridden that one time and the car will start.
Indeed yes Rob McConnell,
1997 does have the resistor (VATS) key...
(a POPULAR topic = problematic system
9in my opinion)).
Obviously you know... YES... trying the
"spare" key could help... or the dirt on the
contacts just inside the keyway needs to
be disturbed JUST enough to allow for a
decent contact...
Always look at the key that it is dry and clean.
If you have a crisp new dollar bill... and can
fold the corner into a point...
GENTLY Insert that into the keyway sufficiently
to wipe the interior of those contacts...
If your "CHIP" key has any contact left...
that should be enough to get the security light
out of your way...

Does your key have a chip on it? If it does its probably the problem

SOURCE: starter wont engage, jumped starter with key on
This is a pretty common problem on GM vehicles. This is what is happening. Your vehicle has switched itself into ANTITHEFT mode. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM. These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. There is where the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle.

No... you do NOT have to wait 3 minutes to try ANOTHER key (see 1998 manual)
