Idle air control or throttle position sensor if you can raise the engine rpms in park or neutral but drop in drive or reverse the truck dies the throttle position has a dead spot in the contacts inside the sensor from everyday use and is now no good if you can't get the rpms to go up the idle air controls either shot or the hose going to it has a hole in it or your spark plugs are out of gap and can not maintain the idle because of the air gap and the lower rate of firing when the idle rpms drops check all and good luck Stephen

Which engine? What have you done for maintenance? Last time spark plugs replaced? Only when cold or happens when warm too?

SOURCE: 2001 ford expedition spark plug location

That's because they are hidden quite well. If you look at the engine, you'll see yellow plastic prongs (?) that look like spark plugs, but hook up to the silver tubing.  That's the fuel injectors.  BUT, right behind the yellow plugs, are black ones.  The black one is the connector to the spark plug.  The plug itself sits about 4 inches down into the block of the engine.  They are a real pain, and from what I can tell, you only have decent access to the first 2-4 of them, then they get too far back and start going under the dash (you'll see what I mean when you get there).

You have a transmission problem. Tcc(torque converter clutch) solenoid stuck. Basically when you put it in drive, it is starting out in overdrive. Causing the engine to die.

I got a 2003 ford Taurus 3.0 when I put into gear it dies when I put into reverse it dies when I put into low gear it don't die I replaced torque convertor and tcc soliniod and still does the

I would start by checking the throttle plate for carbon buildup. Clean the throttle body with carb cleaner and an old toothbrush if any is found. Other than that you could be dealing with a major vacuum leak, disconnected air intake tube or bad mass air flow sensor.

Some signals needed by the ECU might be missing. Check if all connectors are properly connected, especially the ones that go to the tranny. Or better get an OBD II monitoring device to do the troubleshooting. Hope it helps.
