Automatic shudders on some gear changes.

I have a VW Transporter van 2.5 TDI, auto.
It shudders sometimes when changing gear, mostly down but sometimes up, around 60 to 80kph. Has approx70k km. Most noticeable between 3rd and top when gently cruising.
Doesn't happen all the time, doesn't happen when manually selecting 3 or 2 or 1, doesn't happen when positive acceleration is needed.
Thanks Richard

This car has both options of auto transmission plus manual gear **** so the only reason it can shudder when the clutch is not fully released and thus takes some time, that's when it shudders, but on accelerating this will not happen cos the centripetal clutch has enough torque such that the clutch is pressed hard to the cam & therefore no shuddering. On cruising speed the probability of clutch slipping making the car shudder. Thus changing the clutch assembly ought eliminate this problem....sodeep

VW CABRIO CAR GOES THRU AND SHIFTS FINE WHEN YOU FIRST START OUT AFTER ABOUT 3-5 MINUTES GOING DOWN THE ROAD IT WILL COME OUT OF GEAR IN LIKE A NEAUTRAL POSTION I PUT SHIFTER IN NEAUTRAL AND THEN BACK IN...

Is it a full auto box or auto with manual selection. Full auto has only 1,2,D,R. If its full auto take it to a regular tyre/exhaust place and ask them to help.
The vw and audi auto gearboxes that also have selectable manual gears are only reliable when they have the correct clean oil in them.
The oil is special and expensive, and you must only use the oil from VW. If you havent changed the gearbox oil, get it done. Its much cheaper as a first step, compared to taking the gearbox apart to check for wear or damage.

Vw transporter t5 04 van t30 2.5

I had the same problem with my T5 130. My mechanic replaced the head gasket to no avail, then we checked the oil filter, that was ok.then we went on to a web forum and found out that the AXD engine suffers from water pump failure. We took it off and it was corroded, the seal had failed and was pumping water into the block. My advice,CHECK WATER PUMP FIRST! Good luck Marc,Somerset.
