In most cases this is caused by a defective rotating clock spring contact to the airbag from the steering column, the system is then disabled by the airbag diagnostic monitor until the system is repaired

There must be a problem with the air bag system for the light to be on, if the system was o.k. the light would be off and have a stored code. You cannot reset this light with a generic obd2 scanner. You need to access the air bag system and read what codes it has stored. Good Luck.

You need to either have the dealer reset it or you can do it if you have VAG-COM. Vag-Com is a piece of diagnostic software that uses a special cable to hook up to your car. You can read/clear codes among a ton of other things. It's very common for VW guys to have. Much easier than going to the dealer if you can find someone close to you. The guys over at www.tdiclub.com are always more than willing to help out a fellow VWer. There is a list of guys with the software - you can actually do a search to see if there's anyone near you. www.vagcomlocator.com or go to www.tdiclub.com

I did the same thing. I am told you have to take it to the dealership or similar to have them reset it with their diagnostic tool (call first, the might no do it or might charge for it). Possible a local garage will have one that is compatible. I have a friend at Goodyear who tried it, but their diagnostic tool was not capable and he recommended the dealership.
