Is it the remote locking not working?
Hi:
Most likely the power lock/unlock solenoid in the door has seized up or rusted, not allowing the door to open or unlock. If the inside door panel can be removed, with the door closed, you should be able to disconnect/ or replace the door lock solenoid and be back in business.
I had come to a similar conclusion. However I can't get the door panel off as the door wont open.

Need to remove the door panel and check the linkage sounds like the retaining clip broke or popped off

There is a child safety switch on the rear latch assembly that prevents opening from the inside handle. This switch may be on. Check your owners manual for more info.

I had a similar problem with my son's 1998 Jetta K2 4 door. I sprayed loads of WD40 into the locking area from the end of the door through the clip slot, worked the mechanism sprayed some more and finally it start working. My mechanic said these are very prone to moisture causing rusting on the moving parts.

this is not the dead lock? if i am right in thinkin that this is a centrally locked car then the sensor in the door isd set too low mybe slipped as only has to be out a little to cause this, more of an antitheft system than a dead lock.

I fixed mine by using fine steel wool to clean the brass contacts located at the right upper door frame on the right door as viewed from the rear of the vechicle.
