You should have it scanned it maybe 1 of the sensors that controls the timing, Actually their are many sensors that control the performance of all vehicles

SOURCE: engine failsafe mode

does the engine completely shut off? It sounds like the electronic throttlebody is causing the problem.

SOURCE: failsafe engine mode

go to a parts store and have the codes read(most of them will do it for next to nothing. There is also more than likely some maintenance needed. get back to me when you have the codes and we can diagnose this together.

Just because there is a code does not necessarily mean that part is bad, but an area to test to find the actual problem.

Failsafe engine mode

You might try to have your battery tested. The Anti-theft system reacts to low battery voltage and automatically reduces the Voltage to the starter so it will not turn over or turn over fast enough to start; thereby defeating thieves.

Failsafe usually is an extreme heat sensor mode which deactivates some of the cylinders so the engine exhausts excess heat through the exhaust valve. This is why top speed is limited and power is reduced. The deactivated cylinders act like air compressors, they have no fuel charge, and thereby draw air into the cylinder and expel heated air.

My ford explorer 2005 has a engine failsafe mode

Check engine light on , failsafe mode . The first thing to do would be to hook up a scan tool an check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . Was the vehicle overheating ? Failsafe mode will shut the vehicle off to save the engine if it is over heating . Do you know if the vehicle has electronic throttle control ? Was their a yellow wrench symbol lit on the instrument cluster as well ?

2005 Explorer changed EGR valve due to code and now fail safe mode is in and wrench light is on. Vehicle starts but throttle does not work.

Most likely the ETC Fail Safe (Electronic Throttle Control)
Various Codes for the Throttle Body will be present

Before you replace the Throttle Body because of a failed
TACM (Throttle Actuator Control Motor) Spray the throttle
inlet and plate with CRC Throttle Body Cleaner

The Failsafe can also occur from a really bad COP Ignition
Coil spiking the PCM (computer) and coming back on both
sides of the TPS Sensor. You then loose throttle plate
position and thus shut down or go only 6 mph

2006 Ford Freestyle. It would not start today.

How old is the battery??? Was the battery load tested??? Are the battery connections tight and clean?
If the battery has a short in one of the cells inside, it will not hold enough voltage and eventually drain its self out. Your engine managment components need to have at least 12.0 volts to work correctly, if the battery voltage falls below a specific value, lets say 10.0 volts, the computer will shut down the vehicle. Just a thought, and 5 years from any battery is an outstanding life expectancy, but near it's end.

Sounds to me like the mass airflow meter, cutting in and out. When faulty it can completely shut a car off, and also ingauge limp mode. I hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.
