I'm asking because this guy is selling his car and he said that the code came on recently but drives fine just idles a little low. Worth the fix and buying the car? Thanks.
Code p0505 refers to idle speed control (ISC) system --malfunction=== causes ---wiring---ISC actuator/IAC valve --throttle motor --throttle valve tight/ sticking---ECM
what you need to do is to contact a BMW service center spares department and get prices for those parts and a quote for the cost to install the new parts then make the decision

Your right it is hard. I usually leave the clamp on the hose to the idle vavle and pull it out with the throttle boot atatched. lossening the clamp on the throttle valve isnt easy. I actually have a long flexible driver to do that. you can use a 6 mm open wrench but it takes a few turns on the clamp.

the idle air control valve is on the throttle body below the throttle positioning sensor. To test first, use a test light on the connection coming to it with the vehicle running. Rev the motor and each terminal should make the light flash. In this case it is most likely the sensor. If they do not flash it is in the wiring or pcm

IAC valve has gone bad. Its located on the throttle body and is what controlls/keeps the vehicle running at idle.

YOU HAVE INTAKE VACUUM LEAK AT THROTTLE BODY OR PCM HAS FAILED.NOT CONTROLLING IDLE SPEED CONTROL CIRCUIT.
