My corolla did the same thing to me--turning the steering wheel and every trick I could think of didn't help---until I had a new key made. My iginition seems to "eat keys"...brand new key and it turned like brand new.

is it the right key for that car? cause if not then that is the problem... if it is the right key, then you might have to replace the key cylinder cause you may have something broken in it...

Typically, the steering is preloaded. This happens when car is turned off with some steering assist being applied (whether you know it or not).

Often you have to manhandle the wheel in one direction or the other while turning the key.

SOURCE: Steering Wheel Locked Up

Do you have the wheels turned all the way in one direction? If so turn them more in the same direction and try turning the key.

SOURCE: the steering wheel locked and key will not turn

1998?? MERC ,,,usual fault its jammed up ,only soloution is to cut off the lock ,sorry but ?? also you might not be able to buy a lock because merc will not sell you a new lock without your -DNA and passport .TRied to buy one once and i had to take the owner with me ,his passport ,his deeds to his house with a electric bill in his name and they still wouldnt give me one because his log book was a british one that showed his english address and not his spanish address,so we had car taken to another dealers where they fitted it ,didnt ask for no paperwork only his money in cash ,and trust me it was a wallet stripping bill

Cause!
One of the most common reasons why a steering wheel won't lock right is that the detent is broken or worn down. If you don't know what the word detent means, then don't worry. The detent is basically "the catch" part that makes sure that your steering wheel locks into place.

Key will unlock the steering but wont turn any further to start

First thing to try is to shake the steering wheel clockwise-counterclockwise while turning the key.

Ignition key

It is possible that your steering wheel is in a full turn position causing tension to the locking bar that prevents movement.
Check your wheels and see if they are turned to the left or right. If so, try turning them FURTHER the same direction to unlock the steering. Good luck.

I own a chevy blazer and steering locked and key wont turn

Hi the chances are the steering lock has locked in a funny position and this is causing it to stay locked.
what you need to do is put the key in the ignition then get hold of the steering wheel and turn it to the left and right as hard as you can whilst turning the key when the steering wheel is turned one way it should unlock the lock and allow you to drive your vehicle.

the wheel may be hard to turn so have the key in the ignition the turn the steering wheel quite hard whilst turning the key doing this should get the lock off and allow you to drive.

let me know if you need further assistance ok

also try putting the key in the other way round as it might be wore on the one side so also give that a try.

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

1996 camry le 6 cylinder. cannot get ignition key to turn to start car. gear is in park and have tried adjusting steering wheel

Hi the steering lock could be causing you the problem try turning the steering wheel hard left whilst turning the key and do the same hard right.

it may be hard to turn but you should find once you have moved it slightly it will unlock allowing you to turn the key so dont adjust the steering wheel turn it to the right as if your trying to turn to the right and if this dont let the key turn turn the wheel to the left it only needs to move slightly to allow the steering lock to free the key,

doing the above should solve you problem

give me a shout back if you have any further problems ok

How do you get a stearing colum unlock and the

hi if the problem is that the lock has locked and wont free when you try and turn the ignition on then what you should try is turning the steering wheel from left to right as hard as you can whilst you try turning the key, the problem is usually that the lock is under pressure from the tyres trying to turn the steering wheel so with this pressure on the lock the key just wont turn so you need to try and release this pressure so that the key will turn and unlock the lock.

so hold the steering wheel tight and turn it left using a bit of pressure whilst you keep trying to turn the key dont hold the key in the same possition as this wont free the lock keep turning the key on and off so that it resets and this should then allow the lock to free and you should be able to start your car, if turning the steering wheel left dont work then try right and repeat with the key on and off until the lock is off and the steering is free.

now it is going to be tight so you will need some force to turn the steering wheel as the force from the tyres will be quite alot so you will need to use force to work the steering wheel left and right whilst turning the key.

now if this still dont work then this will either mean you have a problem with the key or the actual ignition barrel has got a fault if this is the case then your going to need to get a new igniton barrel, the part the key goes into before the lock will free itself, all you need to do to remove the barrel is to remove the cover from the steering wheel surround and then you will see how the barrel comes out of its surround but dont do this until you have a new lock in case you forget how you got it apart.

the chances are the lock is just stuck and working the steering wheel left then right as far as you can will free it up if it dont then you can also try jacking the 2 front wheels off the floor like put the car on stands then try turning the steering left and right to unlock the ignition doing it this way releases the pressure from the tyres and should make it easier to unlock the steering.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Key won't turn in the ignition and the steering wheel is locked

In hope that you have the right key, put him in, try to turn the steering wheel a little bit at the same time you try to unlock the ignition.Sometimes it's possible that you've used your steering wheel as help wile getting out of the car. At this case, maybe the wheel lock snaps in, but the wheels are under pressure from the ground. Now you want to unlock your car at it seams that the key wont turn. The wheels get pressure from the ground, so the whole steering is under pressure and your steering wheel pressed against the locker block. If you try to turn the locked steering wheel, you'll see that it turns appr. 1" to one side. This is the needed space to unlock with the key. I hope that works in your case.
