Look up kits which change from R12 to R134 freon. In the beginning, things were advertised as incompatible and that compressors could not be reused

From what I understand there are chemicals which can be added to the systems once the old Freon and oil are removed. There are Freon recovery machines which collect the old material.

A technician then can add a neutralizer and refill the system with modern freon and the seals and bearings are suppose to handle the new chemicals.

So for the Freon recovery aspect, you need to go to a professional for this service.

SOURCE: 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis required oil weight

If u have a moderate climate, 10W-30W, if cold climate 5W-30W, do not use any heavier weight of oils.

SOURCE: Mercury grand marquis 1997 temperature control

I'm not sure if yours is identical to mine since yours is second gen and mine is third gen, but with mine (1998 MGM), the heat was stuck on all the time. Full heat would practically cook your feet and you couldn't shut it off.

It was a servo/servo arm that controls the hot/cold mix door. The part was $15. The labor was $700. They had to take the entire dash out of the car to get at the part. Required two more visits due to a missed electrical connection to a daylight sensor and a vacuum issue that made the car stall when put into reverse.

My car had 150K on it at the time. Has 165K on it now. Still runs great and looks great. It's now my wife's auto and I drive a 2006 MGM.

Air suspension on my grand marquis comes on with engine off

What is probably going on is the air suspension has a leak so the compressor is breaking down. So it will run at odd times trying to make up for the times it can not run. What you need to do is look for a conversion kit. The conversion will stop all problems that you are having now and you will never have to worry about it again. I would recommend strutmasters.com. They have great prices and there kits are guaranteed to last the life of the car. I posted the link below so you can take a look.
