Question about 1991 Ford Taurus

Smoke coming from passenger side of engine while raining.

Today smoke began coming from the right side of my 1999 Ford Taurus. I drove it approx 15 miles without any problems, then it began to rain and I smelled some faint burning smell and when I stopped it was smoking/steaming out from under the hood. It was primarily close to the windshield and from the between the passenger side door and the front panel of the car. Could this have anything to do with the heavy rain? Any other ideas? Thanks.

From what you describe the problem most likely is a coolant hose or a heater core fitting that is leaking. The area that you describe is where the car heater is, and there are hoses that attach to the heater. One serious symptom of such a leak is that the car will begin to over heat, so this needs to be looked at. There is likely very little to no coolant in the coolant reservoir. With the engine cold, have someone check the coolant level in the radiator.

Check your coolant level and if the rug on the passenger side is wet...sounds a lot like a leaking heater core.

Sounds like it could be your catalytic converter is starting to plug up on you. Check under the car and see if it is very hot you may have to replace this A.S.A.P

I assume you are saying you have a check engine light illuminated.

Most auto parts stores will read the OBD II code(s) for check engine lights at no charge. The codes they read will give you an idea of what the problem is.

Battery light comes on and off regularly. Local parts store says the battery is fine and charging. Today the car cut out on me twice, once at idle and another as I began to accelerate. Related? Drove other...

This is caused by a loose belt or it can be caused by brushs wearing out and the altanator is detecting a fault with low votage. if the battery is ok try clean the battery cables first then if the light still comes on I would think of replacing the altanator or at leats the brushes and the split ring commutator.

Right rear brake has slow brake fluid leak. It's a 99' Ford Taurus

leaking fluid will not cause a brake to lock up unless the wheel cylinder is leaking and caused the brake shoe to swell. If so, you need a new wheel cylinder.

Starter kick back

If this is a gas engine, check the ignition coil or plug wires. A simple test...

Start the truck at night, then look under the hood while it's running. Don't use a flashlight or your headlights; it should be dark !

If you see sparks anywhere around the engine, you've found the problem. Now you can turn on a light to see where they're coming from - probably from a cracked ignition coil.

Good luck !
