Audi A4 ESP light comes on and car shakes/vibrates strongly

My car recently started this issue when I drive on the highway approx for 20 mins or more. The ESP light would come on, it feels like as if i took my foot of the gas when i haven't (for a second). It then starts shaking/vibrating violently and fails to accelerate. I have found if I pull over on the hard shoulder and switch engine off for 5 mins or so the problems go away and this allows me to drive just fine for another 5 mins before everything starts all over again.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am dealing with this issue with my 2003 a4. The Esp Is your tractioon controll, which is tied into your Abs system. Your Brake light Circuit is also tied in, so. Check your Brake Fluid, all Rear Bulbs, then look into Abs wheel speed sensor. $100 bucks each. The yaw sensor is unlikely culprit, but the ESP Controll module which is located under glove box is most likely the suspect.<!-- from fixya rte -->

Audi a4 3.0 quattro...the esp light comes and my car dies!!!!

Sometimes the issue is with the mechanical vacuum pump off to the side of the ABS/ESP module. It looks like a round silver canister. This issue is all over Google with many possibilities but the one I copied is most common.

2002 Audi A4 Esp Light comes on, car turns off when I have to sto

I had the same issue with my '05 A4 1.8T.  Turns out it was the RPM sensor.  Audi tried to tell me it was teh fuel pump and the cam-shaft positioning sensor.  Paid for teh fuel pump replacement and it died 6 blocks from the dealership.  Then they replaced the RPM snesor, works great now... Except it's still an Audi.
