No, and there should not be one after it. The only place a filter should be is before the injection pump.

you may have a fuel tank strainer some sort of filter which filters the fuel coming out of the tank
not fuel filter more of a strainer type
see with your manufacture

I assume this is a diesel engine. Diesels are usually problem free until they start aging. One reason could be that the header pump is on its way out. This is the pump that supplies the diesel fuel to the injector pump, Your car is 14 years old already, and it is time to pick up little hassles like this.
Have the pressure from the header pump checked by a technician / service station and compare this with the factory specification (which the technician / service station should be able to give you).
When last did you have the injector nozzles tested / replaced? The nozzles are much like spark plugs on petrol engines, they have a definite lifespan and should be checked and replaced after a while. They are not overly expensive. If the service station is not reputable they might ask a lot of money for the labor to replace and set them up, but that is one of the joys of motoring.
The Patrol is an excellent truck, I used to drive one with a breakdown hoist to tow in vehicles.

You will need to have the transmission removed to access the torque converter. A new torque converter should fix things unless debris from the damage has spread throughout the trans, in which case a strip down of the trans is the way to go...or a new/secondhand trans is installed.......

What year? Electronic controls of injection pump or mechanical?
what type of smoke comes out of tailpipe when trying to start when hot? How do you eventually get it to restart?

Black smoke is rich fuel (lean) have the fuel pressure regulator checked the internal rubber diafram will repture and cause the to happen

the fork only goes on the selector one way and it is not they obvious way
