there is an electric motor driving the actuator on the transfer case.if it sticks the 4 wheel drive will not engage and the light will not come on. tapping on the actuator lightly with a plastic hammer sometimes will get it to work again.some have vacuum lines as well and those lines have to be checked that there is vacuum

it sounds to me like the motor that switches the transfer case into 4 wheel drive DO NOT try to put it in 4 wheel. There should be no problem driving it as it is but if you continue to try it may get stuck in between and cause major problems
Check to see if the power steering pump is still turning. If you have a broken drive belt (serpentine belt or "fan" belt), and the pump doesn't turn, you have no power assist. If the pump is still turning, check the fluid level in the reservoir.
This means there is a fault in the four wheel drive system, the light reset's each time the key is turned off, then it tests itself after the engine is started, if the fault occurs again the light will come back on.
