Although the key itself doesn’t have a chip there is a pass lock system. The ignition tumbler and housing have a sensor. Have you tried the relearn procedure?

Although some keys do not have an embedded transponder, such keys are designed to give access to the vehicle only and not to allow engine starting.

To allow engine starting there must be an embedded transponder in the key, programmed with the correct code.

In the early days of passive immobiliser systems some manufacturers used a key fob to operate the central locking and to house the rice-grain-like transponder chip. Sometimes the key or the fob would break and the owner would attempt to start the engine fruitlessly as the fob would be in a pocket or handbag (purse). The fob had to be within a few inches of the ignition/steering lock...

SOURCE: 2001 chevy venture lost key

You must get a new key from the dealer. Bring in the registration, and photo I.D. Then they will cut you a key. After that, try this procedure....

  1. With a master passkey III key (Black), turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the Security telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn off.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
  5. With a master passkey III key, start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information and the PCM has now learned the fuel continue password.
  6. If it does not work, you will need to get it to the dealer.

SOURCE: Key off and gauges move

it's normal if it's what I think, fuel gauge goes to half on the right side and the farthest gauge to the left goes to half, if it's the case it's the security system that does that after about 10 or 15 minutes they both go back to zero, but as soon as you unlock the door and open it they go back to half until you start it....

SOURCE: how to trouble shoot air condition compresuer

You really want to troubleshoot your AC. Here are some items to follow:
1- Make sure your Compressor clutch work first. You can jump the wire to test it when the engine is off.
When you know the clutch work then you can look for the other things not makeing it activated.
2- It it doesn't work then you know the problem right there.
3- If it works then check the Low and high pressure according to compressor spec.
3- Check your engine temperature sensor. Don't think that your temp reading gauge is coorect then your engine temperature for your AC is working.
4- Check your compressor sensor speed. It has to be in sych with your crankshaft sensor before it allows the clutch engaged to prevent burning your compressor when it is locked up is in freezing mode ( ex.in case some clever people jumping wire to control the clutch bypassing all other rerquirement).
5- If you think these items need to be addressed by professional better then do-it yourself then I have no objection. Good luck on trying.

SOURCE: passlock reset for 2001 s10

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... If anything on this page helps you, please remember to comment or give me a thumbs up on the myfixya sight so i can have a better rating to help more people on this. Thanks

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. The cost is the same, but i get credit for the sale and im trying to earn my money back, as you will be able to do if you buy fron NewRockies and join the free affiliate program. Thanks

Any GM or Isuzu Vehicle with VATS or PASSKey or PASSLock security systems.

Chevy S10 2000 2.2 lt. Won't start , security light stays on, tried passcode reset didn't work need help please

Just making sure that you did a proper relearn:

30 Minute Learn Procedure
1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON, vehicle will not start.
3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes, the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
ImportantThe vehicle learns the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
6. Start the engine, the vehicle has now learned the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password.

You might also check the 10A TBC fuse under the hood.
If the relearn procedure works, but you continue to have security immobilizer issues, you will probably need to replace the halo sensor. You can get a kit from GM.

Security light stays on

Annette: According to http://www.realworldautomotive.com/shoptalk-questions-1999-chevy-tahoe-security-light-on-dash-t467.html : " Passlock is a second generation General Motors' theft deterrent system. With the use of a Passlock sensor (mounted in the steering column) the Passlock system can determine improper ignition key and lock cylinder operation by monitoring magnetic fields emitted by the lock cylinder assembly. Once improper operation is confirmed, engine startup is disabled.
The Passlock system eliminated the resistor chip mounted in the ignition key used by the previous Passkey system, including the headaches and expense that went along with it.
Passlock is a subsystem of the vehicle's Powertrain Control Module. The Passlock sensor sends a signal to the Passlock control module. The Passlock module reads this signal and sends the appropriate information to the Powertrain Control Module. If the ignition key and lock cylinder operates normally the engine will start as usual. If it was operated improperly the Powertrain Control Module will be directed to disable fuel injector operation, prevent engine startup, and there will be a diagnostic trouble code set in the Passlock Control Module's memory.
I just wanted to give you an understanding of system operation. It's gonna require the correct scan tool for proper diagnosis. Weak links are the circuits to and from the Passlock Sensor in the steering column. It's a very sensitive signal and can be easily affected by shoddy electrical connections.
If a scan tool displays diagnostic trouble code B2960 (Passlock sensor voltage out of range), the next step would be a resistance check and a complete inspection of connections and wiring involving the sensor. Pay the diagnostic time at a heads-up auto repair shop."

I have a 2001 chevy s10 and when i go to start it the security lite flashes and it makes a relay click what could cause that

The security, antitheft, or passlock light is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterperates this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle.
This link may help you find ways to bypass this or fix it yourself.

Passlock system trouble

In most cases, either the sensor in the lock cylinder is faulty, or the chip in the key.
Have you tried a different key ?

1999 GMC Safari is equipped with a PassLock* system. It is designed to disable engine starting unless the ignition lock cylinder rotates correctly when the proper key is installed. The system is similar in concept to the PassKey* system. However, it eliminates the need for a key-mounted resistor pellet.
The components of the PassLock* system are as follows:
> The ignition lock cylinder
> The ignition switch
> The PassLock* sensor
> The PassLock* module
> The security indicator
> The Vehicle Control Module (VCM)

If any of the components (with the exception of the security indicator) is replaced, the PassLock* sytem must be reprogramed before engine start will be enabled.

When the system malfunctions, it is necessary to retrieve fault codes from the VCM to correctly determine which part of the system is causing the problem.

Security light flashes, and car want start, except bye the starter, and suddenly stops.

Depending on the year of vehicle how the security system works (you didn`t specify year or model). Older models up to 1997 use passlock I, they have a chip in the shaft of the key, and usually break in the steering column just behind the ignition key cylinder. You will need to know the code number of the key, and will have to order a new ignition cylinder and new keys. After 1997 its passlock II which has the chip inside the head of the key. It learns the code of the key and ensures its the correct key every time you start the car. The most likely problem with this system is the passlock sensor in the ignition switch. Try turning key to run (do not crank) leave key on for 10 minutes, the security light should be flashing. When it stops flashing or goes solid (after 10 min relearn) try to start again. If starts you will need the passlock sensor soon. It probably has a trouble code set in the BCM (body control computer).

Gm passlock security system how to disable

Wiring diagrams can be found online, however i believe you can re-learn the key by leaving it inside the ignition tumblen and switch it to accesory. Then disconnect the b attery for about ten minutes and then try starting the car without taking the key out.
