P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor A MalfunctionP1618 SBDS Interactive CodesCheck the wiring going to the transmission. Look for a pinched wire from the car being put on a rack or possibly an accident you may have had recently. If you can find no problems with the wiring or connections then it is time to see a professional transmission expert. It may just be that the transmission has an internal problem.
go to Advance auto parts to test the OBD II sensor codes first to see what codes are coming up. Advance auto parts has one there they can check your codes for free.

This has happened twice in our 2000 V40. There is a transmission sensor that goes wonky, or possibly gets a bad connection. You'll probably get engine codes P1618 (Transmission code waiting) and P0705 the actual transmission code saying there's trouble.
Both times I was able to reset the sensor by shifting repeatedly with the engine off and the key in various positions. Sorry I can't be more specific. There were directions on the net and I followed them the first time. The second time I wasn't able to find them and just shifted and keyed for 5 minutes and it was fixed.
Ours goes bad when it rains, so I'm thinking it's a bad connection.
If you failed an emmisions test it must be an O2 sensor , there are a couple of them your mechanic should be able to look up that code for you most probably an O2 upstream or downstream sensor
This is a common problem of Volvo S40. You can try this trick to turn off the flashing arrow light.
1) Turn off Engine
2) Turn key to "On" position (Not start the engine), you will see the panel light will on
3) Step on the break paddle
4) Shift the gear from "P" to "L" 10 times
5) Turn key to " Off" position
6) Now you can start the engine.
7) If doesn't work, you can repeat the procedure.
Something is going on with the transmission control system. You need to find out what codes are stored in the system. Most likely the transmission range switch is failing.
if you are refuring to the yellow check engine light. thats an emmision control light, it's not related to
oil or water capacity. it has only to do with emmision control devices. if the light is on steady. bring it to your mechanic and have him or her pull codes from your on board computer as soon as possible. if the light is flashing bring it to them now. stop driving the car or damage will be done to your cars converter.
good luck chris
