The switch is on the gearbox, But not sure of the exact location for your model. But guess there are not many other wired items on the gearbox.

SOURCE: Backup lights in Ford Exp 2002 will not come on

on the side of tranny where shift cable connects is the transmission range sensor or also called the MLP,this sensor could be the cause of no backup lights.
the door ajar switches are located in the door latchs.door ajar switches stick alot, spray WD-40 into all door latches, then open and close doors several times,if switch is only sticking this will cure problem.

SOURCE: 2004 Ford Ranger. My brake lights won't work.

Ok it was important to know if 3rd brake lamp was working so we would know where to start.
Since it is not then you will have to first check for power to the brake lamp switch on the pedal itself. You should have power on the LG/RD wire which comes from fuse 19 (20 amp) in the interior fuse panel. When you press pedal down power should then be on both sides the LG wire also. This then goes to fuses 42 (7.5amp) for the left rear and fuse 38 (7.5 amp) for the right.

Backup lights don't work

in automatic transmission there is a neutral safety switch, that lets the ECM and BCM know the selected shifter position. check the switch and wiring. in manual trans the reverse switch is mostly located on transmission.

I have a 2006 Ford Escape Limited w/ auto transmission. I just replaced the alternator and all on a sudden the backup light stopped working. I am not sure it has anything to do with Alternator. I was told...

Back up light switch is located in the shifter area. remove cover ,you will see the switch where the shifter hits the switch to cause the lights to work.

2004 Ford Escape BACKUP LIGHTS both are completely not working. We have new bulbs and the fuse is new what could be the problem for the lights not working?

My guess would be the neutral safety switch on the transmission.
The switch also acts as a backup light switch when the shifter is in reverse.
I would check for power at the switch for the reverse light circuit.

Reverse lights not working on 1993 Ford Ranger

Not sure what transmssion you have but basically it goes from fuse on P/O wire to either the MLP switch on automatic or just a backup lamp switch on manual and leaves the switch on BK/PK wire to the bulbs. Should be easy to trace with a 12v test light.
