SOURCE: 5 digit code to unlock my 1997 Mercury Sable
It is located on the keyless entry module located under the drivers side dash. There will be a five digit code on the side of the box facing the passenger side. Enter the code and it should unlock. Follow owners manual to change the code, it will store both codes at the same time and either should work.

If it "RED" in color, like p/s fluid, and coming from the BOOT, then its your p/s rack assembly. The unit has to be replaced and alignment reset. ..also check the HOSES they are prone to leak also...hope this helped..GL

SOURCE: 1999 mercury sable engine code
for p0401:
In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.
Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open.
Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits.
Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model).
Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one).
Replace the EGR valve.
