I have a 1997 chev cavalier 2.2 engine. When i start it the motor revs so hi it sounds like its gonna blow up, thats how hi and it also surges. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Peggy

What size motor?

check the voltage at battery engine off, it should be at least 12.6 volts. with engine running should be 14.1 to 14.7, if running voltage is way lower then above. alt or the belt needs attention. if battery voltage when off is lower then 12 volts replace battery. good-day !

I will need a bit more info though. Like can you give a better example of the sound and where exactly is the noise coming from. I mean the engine area or the rear of the car. Yes, the PCM for your vehicle's engine has a rev/speed limit seeting programmed into it. Most stock, non high performance/police package vehicles usually won't go above a top speed of 97MPH. if you were to rev your engine while it was in park or neutral, once the engine reaches the cut out rpm limit preset in the PCM, it will cause the engine to cut back, then it will rev up until it hits the preset limit, then cut back, and it keep repeating that pattern. It may sound as though you have a high rev ignition failure that sounds like waaa, waaa, waaa, waaa, but that indicates the PCM is doing its job.

if its getting too much gas hook up a scan tool and look at the engine coolant temperature if it's reading way too cold then it's telling the computer to dump more fuel in if the temperature looks normal it's probably going to be the fuel pressure regulator

turn on the blower and listen for the sound of the motor turning. usually chev puts them up behind the glove box or somewhere in the passengers foot compartment.

that car does not have a distributer it has coil packs

it sounds like the check valve in the fuel pump is letting the fuel bleed back into the tank
