Question about 1996 Toyota Tercel

Knocking in the engine

I have a knocking sound in my engine when i rev the engine over 2000 rpm and it stops after 4000 rpm or higher, it's a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4 L. What could this possibly be?

i just recently did an oil change and the brakes but i will check the oil levels and look for leaks and i will message you back thanks

Has the car recently been serviced?
Check your oil level, or anything different under the hood, ie, new oil stains, or signs of leakage.
This could possibly be the hydraulic tappits, that are in need of adjustment.
You'll need to hand over some green, to a descent mechanic tho.
But look for the obvious signs.

Sounds like you experiencing a crank bearing problem.Take a long half inch pipe or a long ratchet extension have someone race the engine for you,at the same time place the listening devise on various areas of the engine.Listen for the noise,YOU Will Know!

Why the rpm dose not go higher than 4000 rpm

The vehicle has a built in no load engine REV limiter to prevent damage to the engine from drivers who insist on "gunning the engine".

My engine revs from 2000 rpm to 4000 rpm and then back down, over and over

if your car is equiped with an EGR valve it may be stuck open, locate it and give it a little tap to release, or remove it and inpect for carbon build up, replace if necesary.

2000 pontiac grand am 3.4 motor auto trans 4 door.Car starts and drives okay motor seems to stumble slightly between 3000-4000 rpms. with car stopped in park try to rev motor will only go between 3200-4000...

Hi Tom your vehicle is equipped with a Rev limiter it will not allow you to rev the engine above 4000 with the trans in park; as for the first problem you may have one of two things, one of the spark plugs or spark plug wires is bad or you have a flat spot on the throttle positioning sensor in which case have be replaced. My 98 mystique won't go over 4000 rpm's when I try to rev the engine when in neutral it stops at 4000 rpm's and won't go even higher even when i put the gas pedal all the way to the floor.

The engine is equiped with a rev limiter to prevent premature engine failure.

Flickering charge light on dash when RPM's are above 2000. At about 4000 RPM's enginge stumbles.

Sounds like a diode might be going bad in the alternator. If you rev the engine in park or neutral the computer has a rev limiter that kicks in at 4000 rpms. That is normal, it is trying to keep the engine from blowing up. I'd have the alternator checked, it might check ok but be leaking ac voltage.

It just slowed down going up hill came to stop along side road engine still running give gas in gear would not go put in park rev up engine only go two 2.5 rpm tryed this 4to5 times then it went to 4000...

The engine knocks at higher rpm, only at high rpms

First no matter what check the oil level and then if it's a high rev tapping you need to allow the oil to flow through the engine block to try to coat and settle your valves.

But if it's really " knocking " sounds like your lifters and rocker arms are allowing your piston rods to clatter and that needs to be looked into fast.

In neutral car is not going more then 4000 rpm

The 300M is equiped with a rev-limiter. The technology is designed to protect the engine. It keeps you from blowing it up when it has no load on it...If it is driving and shifting ok, and you have no check engine light on...there is nothing wrong.
Why would want to rev the engine past 4000 rpm in neutral anyway? Max torque comes in around 3950 RPM...
If you keep reving it up in neutral you might throw the computer in to LIMP mode, then you wont go no where.

Engine high rev at stop and slowly goes to idle speed.

I've got Hyundai Lantra 1.6 year 2000. It's take time to start when it's hot. When I start my car it revs at about 2k-3k rpm. It also does it when I come to a stop. When I come to a stop it will stay at a higher rpm than that of idle speed. It drives ok when on freeway but uses more petrol. I have changed the water & petrol pump but no luck
