You have to Unbolt the engine mounts and lift the engine, Unbolt the oil pan and rotate the crankshaft by hand to get it to clear the counterweight on the crank. If the engine has 100,000 miles or more replace the oil pump while your in there.

Here is a step by step pictorial on how to change your oil in a Mazda3. Use 5w20 oil.

i belive its in a housing or the oil pan, if its in the pan you will see a cover with a hex head to remove, its about 3 inches in diameter, but if you look there should be a housing with a cap type cover that you remove and the filter is inside, its a cartriage type filter,

YOU NEED A REPAIR MANUAL BECAUSE YOU HAVE A FEW THINGS YOU HAVE TO DO TO REMOVE OIL PAN.FIRST OF ALL YOU HAVE LOWER FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER WITH FLOOR JACK IF YOU HAVE 4WD VECHICLE..DISCONNECT THE FRONT EXHAUST Y PIPE FROM THE ENGINE AND THE EXHAUST SYSTEM.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE OIL PAN SKID PLATE.AND THE LOWER CONTROL ARM CROSS MEMBER FROM BELOW THE OIL PAN.

remove the cover thats under the engine and put an oil pan under the sump nut then remove the sump nut and let the oil fill your oil pan {make sure the oil pan can hold at least 5.5ltr of oil} then remove the oil filter its on the top of the engine inside a housing that has a big black plastic nut on it then fit your new filter put your sump nut back in and fill with oil untll your dip stick is reading full.

What motor is in it? Mostly have to take all the oil pan bolts out, undo the motor mounts and raise the motor up enough for the oil pan to clear the cross member. make sure you don't have too much in the way when you raise the motor, as you may break something.

the plug is directly behind engine, on bottom of oil pan. take a 16mm to remove. just did my oil in 2004 MVP LX so I know its there unless for some odd reason they made your oil pan and forgot to but the plug in it.
