SOURCE: Starter Replacement in a "96" 960

Disconnect the battery and wires going to the starter. If air charge tube is in the way you can remove it. I am not looking at a S-70 turbo right now but sure that I have never had to remove intake to R&R a starter. There might be a bracket on the passenger side of starter with a 12mm bolt into the front of the engine and two 10mm nuts onto the starter. Remove two 13mm stud bolts that hold starter in place and slide out. New starter goes in reverse order.

I have a 96 volvo 960. It has a intermediate miss. Will run fine right after cranking then miss randomly. No commons. Have replaced spark plugs, coil packs, checking wiring to coil packs, replaced ignition...

My first thought is a map sensor being dirty but that model has so many different sensors it's hard to diagnose. Do you have a repair manual to where the car does a self diagnosis test? Hope this helps....

'93 Volvo 960 wagon starts with a shot of ether and continues to run fine; however, will not start without ether (just cranks). Any ideas?

if diesel it is caused by low compression, rebuild it or live with it
if gas you may have a air leak, vaccum line open, or choke not operating

does it start easy after it is at operating temperature

1994 960 volvo feels like it is running out of

1. Check the Fuel Pressure Regulator. No sign of fuel should exist when the vacuum hose is pull out.
2. Check the relay (one by the side of dashboard and one in the fuse box engine bay) for the fuel pump and the injection system.

The motor shakes in my 960 volvo sedan why could that be

A shaking engine usually is an indicator of an engine missfire. Secondary ignition components are the most common failure (Spark plugs, plug wires, etc..). Less likely, but still a consideration are the fuel system components such as the fuel injectors or filter. Further down the list with a vibration in gear at idle are bad engine mounts. If it worsens with engine load such as acceleration then it is likely the ignition system.
Good luck

A Ticking

It could be the voltage regulator trying to charge a dead battery. (It could burn out if you keep doing this)

Or it could be a lifter noise, rust on the belt pulley from sitting in one position for two years.
Buy a good battery, change the oil and put some fresh gas and fuel stabilizer. It might be nothing serious!
