The aftermarket reverse harness should be mrked I hope that helps
They make kits just for this. Just plugs into the existing harness and then you run you wires to the wires from that harness, some may even have matching plugs that go directly to the Head units wire harness plug. I did My Mustang by cutting into the wire Harness and simply used a multimeter to check for battery, memory 12 volts and running light or dash board Illumination wires then you can test the wires coming out from the stock radio to see which are right, left , front, rear, antenna out, etc..
I just labeled them with magic marker on some masking tape with what they were before I cut off the harness permanently.
1991 Ford Explorer XLT Radio and Speaker Wire Colors
Pulled out the stock radio and found two plugs on the back of it. One plug had 7 wires (Power, Dimmer, Amp etc.) and one had 8 (Speakers).
7 wire plug (I could see these wires immediately from the plug):
Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ wire = Light Green w/ Yellow Stripe Car Radio Ground Wire = Black Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ wire = Yellow w/ Black Stripe Car Radio Dimmer Wire = Light Blue w/ Red Stripe Car Radio Illumination Wire = Orange w/ Black Stripe ?? Don't know ?? Red Wire (No power to wire Constant or Accessory) Car Radio Amp Wire = Blue
8 Wire Plug (Wires were wrapped in a grey outer sleeve, had to cut sleeve to get to wires.):
Right Front: White w/ Green Stripe (+) Brown (no stripe) (-)
Right Rear: Purple w/ White Stripe (+) Light Blue (no stripe) (-)
Left Front: Light Green (no stripe) (+) White w/ Orange Stripe (-)
Left Rear: Light Blue w/ Black Stripe (+) Yellow (no stripe) (-)
Speaker Wires (found at the individual speakers in the doors)
Right Front: White w/ Green Stripe (+) Green w/ Orange Stripe (-)
Right Rear: Orange w/ Red Stripe (+) Black w/ White Stripe (-)
Left Front: Orange w/ Green Stripe (+) Blue w/ White Stripe (-)
Left Rear: Red w/ Green Stripe (+) Red w/ Blue Stripe (-)
The easiest way is to check the speakers themselves as manufacturers tend to change colors of speakers at a whim. Usualy though you will have 8 wires (4 front & 4 rear) paired in colours (white goes with white+black stripe(stripe is possative on speaker))etc. Not knowing the cars electrics I can't be more specific.(I live in UK so don't know that much about U.S. cars)

Note: using an optional snap on wire harness adapter will simplify the wiring. Most snap on
wire harness adapters have already converted and color coded the wires from the auto
makers in dash wire harness to match typical aftermarket radio wire colors.
** The wire colors listed in the chart above are typical for these vehicles during these years
but may not be the exact colors for this vehicle. This is another reason to use a snap on
wire harness adapter. **

there is a code for color!? ok, wait im searching... found it! here you go, hope it helps...
Wiring color codes are the identification colors that color the wires
in your automobile. For example, if you have a British car the blue,
blue and white , and blue and red wires are for the headlights. The red
and white wires are for the instrument lights, and the green and white
and green and red wires are for the turn lights. The color code simply
identifies what that wire does. Could you imagine if all of the wires
were the same color. You couldn't identify anything in a harness.
