There are test strips you can get at auto parts stores to check for exhaust gas in coolant.

You likely have leaking head gaskets.

This sounds like a possible head gasket leak, what happens on the North Star engine is the head bolt studs pull out of the aluminum block. Test for exhaust in cooling system. EXTREMELY expensive to fix correctly, cost prohibitive in most cases, turns the car to instant junk. A real bummer.

I've got the exact same problem on my
Seville. It skips on #1 cylinder when first started. I just added BAR'S Leaks Liquid Copper to coolant, as I assume I've got a leaking head gasket. I'll let you know how this works out.

I had same issue. 1994 Cadillac Seville SLS serp diagrams not like my engine. Found that it is the same as 1993 Cadillac STS Northstar!

i have a 1994 cadillac seville sls and it wont shift out of 2nd gear i have replaced the shift silenoid "B" and the vss and it still wont shift and the pcm is still good. What else could it be?

YOUR LOWER HOSE LEAK COULD BEEN WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING.OVER HEATING PROBLEM COULD BE WATER PUMP GOING BAD.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CORRECT AMOUNT OF COOLANT IN COOLANT SYSTEM.

If the leak is in the rear of the engine, there are several things that can cause the leak. Intake manifold gasket, heater hoses, heater core.........
If this is a small leak, you might try a can of Bars Leak. It should stop any component coolant leak, however, it will not cure a heater hose coolant leak.
If you try the bars leak, give it 50 to 100 miles to stop the leak.
If it is a large coolant leak, it is best to have the leak identified and repaired, much cheaper in the long run if you are planning on keeping the car.
