theres a solenoid that selects gears it can trick the gearbox into limp mode, id have that checked before spending big money i spent 6000 on a new gearbox (not standard price i had a heavily modified gearbox) because the standard gearbox did the same turns out it was an $80 solenoid, i found out after forking out the money. any ford dealer should be able to plug it in and run diagnostic checks for you
