It means the computer noticed something wrong or lost contact with an important sensor that could ruin the engine or transmission and has de-rated the power so you can get home without the car stopping or damaging itself. Limp Home Mode or Limp-in is an operating condition set by the vehicle computer.

SOURCE: limp home mode

You need to scan for engine trouble codes. Most parts stores will do this for free, and tell you what they mean and make recommendations on what to do. The 'limp mode' kicks in to prevent damage to the vehicle when the computer gets data that something is wrong.. When you shut it off, it's temporarily reset, but then the cars computer is signaling there is still a problem, and it goes back into limp mode. If you have any questions after getting the codes 'read' , post questions and code #;s here for help. Good luck.

Does the speedometer work? If no, then it sounds like the output shaft speed sensor. If yes then it might be the input shaft speed sensor.

SOURCE: xr6 going into limp home mode when car is turned

theres a solenoid that selects gears it can trick the gearbox into limp mode, id have that checked before spending big money i spent 6000 on a new gearbox (not standard price i had a heavily modified gearbox) because the standard gearbox did the same turns out it was an $80 solenoid, i found out after forking out the money. any ford dealer should be able to plug it in and run diagnostic checks for you

What might cause 2004 4l80e to be in limp mode no speedometer and stuck in 2nd gear

When the system goes into to Limp Home mode it means that a serious fault has occurred in the electronics or a mechanical failure has been sensed. What you need to do now is have the computer control system scanned for fault codes, this (the fault codes) will give you a starting point to diagnose the problem that has caused the Limp Home mode to be initiated by the computer control module.

It will not go pass 30

check the fuel filter, if it plugs up this can cause no fuel flow to engine. Also check the air filter and the plugs, and wires, if not the filter. It can be most anything but hope this helps. or it may of went into limp mode, if so call or take it to a garage.

Trans is in limp mode,

Go to an Autozone, Advance, or O'reilys for a scan. Limp home means engine problems too.

Overheating is a problem or loss of signal from an engine sensor. One thing you might try is after, and only after you get a scan is to wipe the memory.

The companion computer may have embedded info and is responding to the old "Limp signal".

Check any Vacuum lines or Vacuum dashpots which can affect powertrain controls.

2002 Impala: transmission limp mode...

Most transmissions have a limp mode, or limp-home mode.
If the driveline computer thinks there is something wrong, it can lock the transmission into one gear, such as 2nd gear. Usually reverse will also be available. The Impala automatic has 4 speeds. 2nd speed or gear will get you home, but the engine rpms can get a little high. I wouldn't get on the expressway will in limp mode.
Before taking to the shop, you might want to try and reset limp mode by turning the car off for a couple minutes, or you may have to disconnect and reconnect the battery.

Car will only go 15mph in first gear at high rpms

if it is an automatic than the car is in limp-home-mode... that means some sort of engine code popped up and set limp home on. a dealer can figure it out...

if it is a manual... change gears. :-)

1999 voyager

this is called "limp mode" which means to "limp" home. Chryslers default to limp mode when there is a problem with a speed sensor, body control module or other sensor

scan the computer and see what it says

I sometimes remove a bettery terminal leave disconnected for a few minutes and this resets the computer and clears codes

better to scan though and clear and see if it helps
