My first thought would be to change the battery in the fob, assuming it has one. There are so many different ways to open these fobs, though, that I can't help with specific instructions.

If that doesn't help - or there isn't one - then you will probably need help from a BMW specialist garage.

The fob charges itself while in the ignition so doesn't have a battery.
Happens with the spare as well.

I've just worked it out to be something to do with the aerial. While holding the fob above it, it works everytime.

SOURCE: toyota avalon 2006 key fob apparently doesn't work

It looks like you have the "Smart Key" (a small rectangular box) that does not look like a traditional key.
What you also have is a dead battery inside the Smart Key.
Look closely at the box; there is a little button on the side. Press it. This will release a small hidden key. After you remove the small key, use a small flat blade screwdriver to pry the case of the box open at the slot provided. Take the unit to a store that sells miniature batteries, and have it replaced. You will NOT have to reprogram it after the battery is changed. The life span of the miniature batteries is roughly 20 months, less if exposed to RFI, like sitting on a TV, a monitor, or other electrical device. The Smart key TRANSMITS all of the time, even when you do not press the buttons. This is why the battery only lasts 18-20 months. Let me know if this fixes your issue..

SOURCE: key fob lights up but doesn't work even with a new battery

I'm more familiar with Range Rovers and Saab's when it comes to key fobs but if you changed the battery you have to re-program the key fob. If you do not have an owner's manual that can take you through the steps you might want to try: push and hold the lock button on the key fob, put it in the driver's side door and turn to lock. With the button still depressed turn back to open, remove the key and release the button. If this doesn't work check any and all fuses associated with your system and last but not least you could take it to a dealer. Good luck!

SOURCE: central locking does not work on my BMW 320D SE model

hi

there is a motor placed inside the doors for the operation of the central lockin system. when you open the door by key this motos is activated and all door locks are released. your problem may because of this motor is failed.

cause of the failure
1.the wire going to the motor may be chopped off.
2.the junction box connecting the wires may be damaged.
3.fuse may be blown out.
4.motor itsef damaged.

so please check weather power is coming to the motor using multi meter. if the power is not coming to it then the problem is with the wires. if the power is coming to it then problem is with the motor.

i suggest you to take to BMW because you need to remove the door pannel its better if they do it.

My bmw 320d alarm went off and the key fob now doesn't work. Also the rear lights stay on along with all the warning lights on the dash board. Has anyone had the same problem and knows the solution.

new one on me this. I would suggest you disconnect the battery for 24 hrs to let the ecu etc reset, but make sure you have a radio code if needed. Then reconnect and see how you get on. You can easily resync your fob by inserting key in door lock, turn to lock and at the same time press the lock button and to unlock do exactly the same.

Remote will not unlock doors can not unlock from inside

- Sit in the car with all the doors shut and windows up with your key fobs (all your fobs need to be done at the same time)
- With one of your keys turn the ignition on then off and remove the key
- Press and hold the unlock botton and then press the lock button 3 times.
- Release all buttons and the locks will bounce up and down.
- Repeat this with the other key/keys (press and hold unlock and press lock 3 times, locks will bounce)

Note: Only switch your ignition on once, doing so again while programming will reset the process and you will have to start again.
